The Santiago Bernabeu is the venue for the game of the week in the Champions League on Wednesday as former champions Real Madrid and Manchester City collide.

Real return to the Bernabeu just three days on from a miserable La Liga defeat against Celta Vigo while Manchester City arrive in Spain in high spirits after edging a remarkable nine-goal thriller against Fulham in the Premier League on Saturday.

Frequent rivals in this competition, past encounters have been typically thrilling and high-scoring and another evening of entertainment seems likely in Spain this week.

Real Madrid and Manchester City have met on ten occasions in the Champions League since 2020. Man City won four of those games while Real Madrid claimed three victories. All but one of those matches finished with both teams on the scoresheet, while a minimum of three goals were scored in eight.

Real Madrid team overview

Real Madrid turn their attention to the UEFA Champions League after a shock 2:0 home defeat against Celta Vigo on Sunday. In a bad-tempered contest, Real were reduced to nine men with both Álvaro Carreras and Fran Garcia seeing red as the visitors secured a famous win at the Bernabeu.

Xabi Alonso's men have not been in the best of form in the past month. Real failed to win five of their last seven games while they laboured to a 4:3 win against Olympiacos in their most recent UCL runout.

High-scoring outcomes can usually be relied upon when Real and Manchester City collide. All but two of their last 11 meetings finished with three goals or more scored. Five of Los Blancos seven most recent UCL fixtures also delivered over 2.5 goals.

Head coach Alonso is likely to make chances from the side that suffered a surprise La Liga reversal on Sunday. The hosts remain unable to call on several first-team players this week with Trent Alexander-Arnold, Éder Militão, Dani Carvajal and Ferland Mendy ruled out while Dean Huijsen, David Alaba and Eduardo Camavinga are doubtful and will need late fitness checks.

Manchester City

Manchester City team overview

Manchester City arrives in Spain on the back of a wild 5:4 win against Fulham in the Premier League on Saturday. Having raced into a four goal lead, three goals conceded in the latter stages set up a tense finale at the Cottage, but City held on to close the gap on leaders Arsenal to just two points.

Pep Guardiola's side have been in good form, with seven wins picked up from their last nine games but did slip to a 2:0 home defeat against Leverkusen in their last UCL fixture.

Past encounters suggest we should be confident of seeing both teams get on the scoresheet. BTTS landed in all but one of ten previous UCL meetings between Real Madrid and Manchester City since 2020.

A high-scoring outcome should be on the cards, with City seeing at least three goals scored in all but one of their last nine matches.

City boss Guardiola has three injury issues this week. Mateo Kovačić and Rodri are confirmed absentees while John Stones faces a late fitness test.

Prediction

Goals are usually guaranteed when these European heavyweights collide, and I expect that pattern to continue on Wednesday. Over 2.5 goals is my preferred pick at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Three Reasons Why We Expect Over 2.5 Goals

  1. Real Madrid have seen over 2.5 goals in 9 of their last 11 matches against Manchester City
  2. Manchester City have seen over 2.5 goals in 8 of their last 9 matches
  3. Real Madrid have seen over 2.5 goals in 5 of their last 7 matches (Champions League)
