A hugely intriguing UCL contest is set for Tyneside on Tuesday evening as Premier League hosts Newcastle United takes on Spanish giants Barcelona.

Newcastle turn their attention to European affairs after a limp FA Cup defeat against Manchester City on Saturday while Barcelona arrive in England after a hard-fought La Liga win at Athletic Bilbao.

The Catalans claimed bragging rights in a narrow UCL win at this venue earlier this season, and another fascinating contest is likely to see plenty of goalmouth action at St James's Park.

Newcastle and Barcelona have met on three previous occasions. Barcelona claimed two wins, including a 2:1 win in Newcastle earlier this season. Newcastle secured a famous 3:2 victory in their first-ever encounter in 1997.

Newcastle team overview

Newcastle come into Tuesday's UEFA Champions League clash after a 3:1 home defeat against Manchester City in the FA Cup, Harvey Barnes early goal gave the Magpies the perfect start, but the Citizens quickly responded with Omar Marmoush's brace helping to secure a well-deserved road win.

Eddie Howe's side have struggled to maintain consistency this season, and in recent results. The Magpies won five and lost five of their last ten fixtures.

While unreliable in the WDW market, Newcastle have proven a particularly reliable choice for goal chasers. The Magpies have seen BTTS and over 2.5 goals scored in each of their last 11 matches, and we have to expect similar outcomes against a Barca side that often proves defensively vulnerable on the continental stage.

Head coach Howe has several absentees to deal with. Lewis Miley, Fabian Schär, Valentino Livramento, Bruno Guimarães and Emil Krafth are all ruled out.

Barcelona team overview

Barcelona arrive at St James's Park after a narrow 1:0 win against Athletic Bilbao in La Liga on Saturday. Lamine Yamal's second-half strike secured a vital three points for Hansi Flicks's side.

After back-to-back away defeats against Atletico Madrid and Girona last month, the Catalans have responded well, picking up four successive victories while scoring 11 goals and conceding just once.

Like Newcastle, Barcelona have been a reliable choice for goal chasers this season. Flick's side have seen at least three goals scored in all but 12 of their last 13 matches. Seven of those games finished with BTTS landing.

That outcome has been more frequent in La Blaugrana's continental contests this season. All but one of their eight UCL matchups finished with both teams on the scoresheet.

Head coach Flick has a handful of expected absentees this week. Andreas Christensen, Frenkie de Jong, Pablo Gavi and Alejandro Balde are ruled out while Jules Koundé is also tipped to remain sidelined.
