- Venue: Riverside Stadium
Wednesday night at the Riverside feels tense as ever. Middlesbrough sit right in the thick of the promotion fight, chasing both the Championship title and that precious automatic spot. Charlton Athletic arrive with a far simpler aim, stay comfortably above the bottom three. The table shows a clear gap. Boro are second, while the Addicks hover in 18th, separated by 25 points.
On paper the favourite seems obvious. Bookmakers agree. Still, the Championship has a habit of ignoring tidy predictions.

Recent meetings have generally tilted toward Middlesbrough. Since 2014, Boro have faced Charlton twelve times in the Championship and won eight of those games. The Riverside club also took the last three meetings.
Charlton managed only two wins during that stretch, with two matches ending level. Goals tend to be scarce as well. These games average about 1.9 goals. Not exactly the type of fixture where chaos breaks out.
Middlesbrough team overview
Late February brought a slight wobble for Kim Hellberg’s side. Boro went three league matches without a win. Two defeats, one draw. In the Championship that kind of mini-run can feel bigger than it actually is.
The response was convincing, though. First came a 3–1 win against Birmingham City. Then last weekend the Riverside watched a very comfortable 4–0 victory over QPR. Momentum returned quickly. Those results pushed Middlesbrough back into second place, now four points clear of Millwall in the promotion race.
Home form has been quietly reliable too. Only one defeat in the last five league matches at the Riverside. The stadium tends to feel controlled rather than frantic, which suits Hellberg’s structure.
David Strelec grabbed his fifth league goal against QPR and should again lead the attack. Alan Browne and Hayden Hackney both scored in that game and continue to provide energy from midfield.
At the back, centre-half Darragh Lenihan remains unavailable with a long-term ankle injury. Apart from that absence, Hellberg’s squad looks fairly healthy heading into Wednesday.

Charlton Athletic team overview
Charlton travel north after edging Birmingham 1–0, a narrow result that finally snapped a four-match winless run. Nathan Jones probably felt a sense of relief more than celebration. Points were badly needed.
Even so, attacking issues still linger. The Addicks have scored fewer than two goals in each of the last seven matches. The structure often looks neat and organised, but the finishing sometimes feels rushed or slightly blunt. Jones has hinted at that in recent interviews.
Away from home, however, Charlton have been more stubborn than the table might suggest. Just two goals conceded across the last three road games tells you something about the discipline. More importantly, Nathan Jones’ side avoided defeat in all three of those matches.
Charlie Kelman might earn a start after coming off the bench to score the winner against Birmingham. That was his fifth goal of the campaign.
In terms of absentees, Lee Buchanan remains sidelined with a cruciate ligament injury. Ethan Laird continues recovering from a hamstring problem.

Prediction
Middlesbrough arrive with confidence after scoring seven goals across recent wins over Birmingham and QPR. Just as important, Hellberg’s side have conceded only two goals in the last seven home matches. The defensive shape at the Riverside looks settled.
Charlton usually stay organised, but chances have been hard to come by lately. If the Addicks keep things tight early, the match could drift into a slow rhythm. Even so, Boro’s quality should eventually show. A controlled 2–0 home win feels like the most reasonable outcome.
Three reasons we expect under 2.5 goals in this game
- Middlesbrough conceded just two goals in their last seven home games.
- Seven of the last eight games of Charlton ended with under 2.5 goals.
- Four of the last five meetings between Middlesbrough and Charlton ended with under 2.5 goals.
Main prediction Middlesbrough - Charlton Athletic
Under 2.5 goals
