Manchester City face a defining night in the Champions League after suffering a heavy 3:0 defeat to Real Madrid in the first leg. Pep Guardiola’s side were second best at the Bernabéu and now have a mountain to climb if they are to keep their European campaign alive.

The setback in Spain was followed by further frustration at the weekend, as City were held to a 1:1 draw against West Ham in the Premier League. With confidence dented and a three-goal deficit to overturn, the hosts must produce a near-flawless performance at the Etihad.

The Citizens had  been in excellent form before last week's disappointments, picking up victories in nine of 11 unbeaten fixtures since a shock defeat against Bodo/Glimt in their penultimate UCL league phase contest.

Pep Guardiola's side have a strong record at the Etihad, with 14 wins and just two defeats in 19 EPL and Champions League home fixtures this season. 

Head coach Guardiola has just two expected injury absentees for Tuesday's second leg. Rico Lewis, Josko Gvardiol, Mateo Kovacic remain sidelined.

Real Madrid return to Champions League action holding a commanding advantage after their emphatic 3: 0 victory over Manchester City in the first leg. Argentinian midfielder Fede Valverde stole the headlines with a superb hat-trick at the Bernabéu.

Los Blancos followed that statement win with another dominant display at the weekend, easing to a 4:1 success against Elche, where Valverde was again on target to continue his rich vein of form under Álvaro Arbeloa.

While formidable at home, Real have struggled more on their travels in this season’s Champions League, losing two of their four away matches. With a three-goal cushion to defend, Los Blancos may adopt a more cautious approach on Tuesday rather than pushing to extend their advantage.

Interim boss Arbeloa remains unable to call on several first team players. Eder Militão, Jude Bellingham, Dani Ceballos, Kylian Mbappé, David Alaba and Rodrygo are expected to miss out again on Wednesday.
