Maccabi Tel Aviv managed to win their 26th league title ever and their second in a row. This year, their goal is once again the same in the domestic competition, and they are doing OK there, sitting in second place with 23 points, two points behind the top spot. However, in Europe, they struggled both last season and this season. Last year, they finished 29th in the Europa League and are doing an even worse job this year. With only one point and one goal scored thus far, they are under pressure to win all three points in order to have some chance of reaching the next stage of the competition. 

After a 6:2 loss against Beitar Jerusalem, coach Zarko Lazetic spoke to the media. He was clearly disappointed with a win, saying they all share responsibility and that they could have done better. The coach said they made mistakes on defence and that they will all try to fix those mistakes in the following game.

Lyon had a turbulent pre-season, where we almost saw them drop out of Ligue 1 due to financial problems. Despite a turbulent period, Les Gones had a magnificent start to the season, winning seven out of eight games. Unfortunately, they have significantly slowed down in recent matches, failing to win five in a row. One reason is the tough schedule, and injuries to a few important players (especially offensive ones). However, due to a good start in Ligue 1 and the EL, they are still pretty high in both competitions. But they have to start winning games as soon as possible and an out-of-form Maccabi Tel Aviv is the perfect opponent to change the negative momentum.

In the previous game against Auxerre, defender Clinton Mata suffered an injury and had to leave the field after 63 minutes. He will most likely miss the game, along with a few others, who will remain sidelined with their injuries - Malick Fofana, Ghezzal Rachid, Ruben Kluivert, Orel Mangala, and Ernest Nuamah.
