Liverpool vs Southampton prediction 23.09.2025 | EFL Cup

Liverpool are undoubtedly one of the best teams in the world and they surely aim for a trophy in every competition they participate in. Arne Slot's team started the season with a defeat in the Community Shield, but after that, the team from Anfield secured six straight victories. In the previous game, they won 2-1 at home against Everton. Slot's team didn't dominate as they used to in that match, but they still recorded another triumph. 

Liverpool had a tough seven days in which they played three matches. The head coach admitted that his team ran out of energy against Everton, so we should expect Slot to rotate the squad and rest the leading players in the EFL Cup against Southampton. 

Liverpool have some problems with injuries. Stefan Bajcetic, Luke Chambers, and Callum Scanlon are unavailable for the game against Southampton. 

Last season, Southampton played in the Premier League, but they ended at the bottom of the standings and returned to the Championship. Southampton started the 2025/26 season as one of the promotion candidates, but started terribly with only six points in six league matches. In the most recent outing, the Saints lost 3-1 on the road against Hull. The guests had 71% ball possession, but the home side had much better goal-scoring chances, so Southampton again remained empty-handed.

Southampton didn't play well against Hull and the manager, Will Still, was obviously disappointed. He said, "Hull capitalised on what we didn't do very well and scored three goals, but yeah, it's really poor from me, really poor from the team. Not good enough."

Wellington is injured and will not play on Tuesday at Anfield.
