After back-to-back setbacks in different competitions, Chelsea will be eager to restore their confidence when they travel to League One side Lincoln City at the LNER Stadium in Tuesday’s EFL Cup third round.
Lincoln City team overview
After six decades away from the second tier, Lincoln City’s push for promotion is off to a strong start, as 18 points collected from their first nine league fixtures have lifted them into third spot, keeping them within touching distance of table-toppers Bradford City.
In their EFL Cup campaign, the Imps were required to start from the opening round but rose to the challenge with conviction, first sweeping aside Harrogate 3-1 before grinding out a late 1-0 triumph over Bolton to reach the third round for the first time since 2018-19.
In the build-up to welcoming Premier League opposition, Lincoln City ignited the atmosphere at Sincil Bank with a commanding late 3-1 triumph over Luton Town, extending their unbeaten home run to six matches this season, four of which have ended in victory.
Head coach Michael Skubala has no injury or suspension concerns, allowing him to approach the midweek test with a clean bill of health and likely stick with the same side that defeated Luton 3-1 at the weekend.

Chelsea team overview
In mid-July, Chelsea set the perfect tone ahead of the new campaign by navigating the revamped FIFA Club World Cup to lift the trophy for the second time in four years, sweeping aside reigning European champions PSG with a convincing 3-0 triumph in the final.
Enzo Maresca’s men picked up right where they left off last term, launching their new Premier League campaign in commendable fashion with two victories and a pair of draws from their opening four fixtures, and everything seemed firmly under control until the events of the past week.
The Blues endured a bruising week as their 3-1 humbling at Bayern Munich in the Champions League was swiftly followed by a bitter 2-1 Premier League reverse against arch-rivals Man United at Old Trafford, leaving morale at a low ebb.
The London club are stuck in a poor three-game winless streak away from home and will look to turn things around against the third-tier side, though they’ll have to do it without injured quartet Levi Colwill, Benoit Badiashile, Romeo Lavia and summer signing Liam Delap.

Prediction
The London side enters this clash as clear favourites thanks to their player quality, experience, and squad depth, but given the unpredictable nature of cup fixtures, betting on goals at both ends appears to be a sensible option. On home soil, the Imps have been in fine form with impressive attacking output, netting two or more goals in all but one of their last six home games, and they look well-placed to threaten Chelsea’s shaky defence, which has conceded seven times in its last three visits. Motivated Lincoln will be eager to prove themselves against top-flight opposition and will look to make the most of any chances that come their way, but beyond a goal, it’s hard to see them achieving much more as Chelsea, even with squad rotation, should prove far too strong.
Three Reasons we expect BTTS
- Lincoln City have scored 2+ goals in five of their opening six home matches.
- Lincoln City remain unbeaten at home since the start of the 2025-26 season (W4 D2).
- Chelsea have conceded at least two goals in three consecutive away matches.
