A place in the final of the Italian Cup is at stake on Wednesday as Lazio host Atalanta in the first leg of their semi-final tie.

The out-of-form hosts return to the Olimpico after a disappointing away defeat at Torino, while Atalanta arrive in Rome following a shock setback at 10-man Sassuolo last weekend.

Recent meetings between these sides have been competitive, and a potentially tense and tight occasion could be on the cards on Wednesday.

Lazio and Atalanta have met on 14 occasions since 2020. Atalanta won six of those matches, while Lazio secured four victories. Only five goals were scored in their four most recent encounters.

Lazio team overview

Lazio turns their attention to the Coppa Italia after a poor performance in their Serre A defeat at Torino last weekend. Colombian forward Duvan Zapata's second-half goal sealed a surprise 2:0 home win for Il Toro.

Maurizio Sarri's side have endured a poor run of form, with no goals scored and just one point picked up from their last three Serie A games. Lazio are now winless in seven of their last eight fixtures (excluding penalty shootouts) and now find themselves outside the top half in Serie A.

A lack of firepower has resulted in several low-scoring outcomes for I Biancocelesti this season. Under 2.5 goals were scored in each of their last four games, and in all but four of 23 previous fixtures.

Head coach Sarri has half-a-dozen potential absentees this week. Toma Bašić and Elseid Hysaj are doubtful to feature, while Mario Gila Fuentes, Pedro and Daniel Maldini are ruled out. Nicolò Rovella is also expected to remain sidelined.

Atalanta team overview

Atalanta arrive in Rome after a disappointing 2:1 defeat at Sassuolo last weekend. Despite boasting a man-advantage for much of the 90 minutes following an early red card for the hosts, Raffaele Palladino's side slipped to a surprise reversal at Mapei Stadium.

The Bergamo-based visitors had enjoyed a strong run of form in recent weeks, winning five of six previous fixtures before their defeat against Sassuolo. Atalanta ensured Italian participation in the UCL round of sixteen after a superb 4:1 comeback victory against Borussia Dortmund last week.

While high-scoring contests are usually to be expected when La Dea are in action at home, recent road games have followed an alternative pattern. All but one of Atalanta's last six away fixtures finished with under 2.5 goals scored.

Head coach Palladino has just one confirmed injury issue this week. Belgian international Charles De Ketelaere misses out for the away side.

Prediction

A tight and potentially cagey first-leg should be expected in Wednesday's Coppa Italia first-leg contest.

Under 2.5 goals is my preferred pick from the Olimpico.

Three Reasons Why We Expect Under 2.5 Goals

  1. Lazio have seen under 2.5 goals in 7 of their last 9 matches against Atalanta
  2. Lazio have seen under 2.5 goals in their last 4 matches
  3. Atalanta have seen under 2.5 goals in 5 of their last 6 away matches
