Hungary host Slovenia in Budapest on Saturday, and while it is only a friendly, there is a bit more riding on it than usual. Neither side made it to the 2026 World Cup, which still lingers in the background. The Golden Team are slight favourites, at least on paper. Still, Slovenia have been awkward to beat lately. You get the sense this might be closer than expected, even if the quality is not always sharp.

Friendly International
There is not much history to lean on here. The last meeting came back in 2008, a friendly that Slovenia edged 1–0. Hard to draw big conclusions from that alone.
Hungary team overview
The Golden Team come into this after a campaign that, if you are being honest, fell short. Finishing third in the group meant no World Cup and not even a play-off shot. That said, the way Rossi’s side ended the run offered a bit of encouragement.
Three matches unbeaten, including two wins, hinted at some late momentum before the 3–2 loss to Ireland brought things back down.
Barnabás Varga was one of the few real bright spots, scoring four times in qualifying. However, coming back from an ankle injury, he might not be thrown straight in. That complicates things slightly in attack.
Szoboszlai and Schäfer are both available, which helps with control in midfield. Still, leaving out Dibusz through injury does weaken the depth at the back more than it might seem at first glance.

Slovenia team overview
The Little Dragons are in a similar position, though arguably with fewer positives to cling to. Finishing third without a single win in qualifying tells its own story. Defence held up reasonably well at times, but scoring just three goals in six matches is, frankly, not enough at this level.
Kek’s side did show some resilience late on, avoiding defeat in three of their last four. Still, those were mostly draws, and draws only take you so far. The lack of cutting edge remains the main issue. You can almost predict how their games unfold. Solid for long spells, then a struggle to convert anything.
Timi Max Elšnik, who scored against Sweden, stays in the squad, alongside Jan Oblak. The absence of Benjamin Šeško, though, feels significant and hard to ignore.

Prediction
A 2–0 win for the Golden Team feels like a reasonable call when you look at the numbers. Slovenia have scored just once in their last four matches, which is hard to overlook. Hungary, meanwhile, have kept two clean sheets in their last four. It is not likely to be spectacular, but it could be controlled.
Three reasons we expect under 2.5 goals
- None of the last four games of Slovenia ended with under 2.5 goals.
- Hungary kept a clean sheet in two of their last four matches.
- Slovenia failed to score in three of their last four matches.
Main prediction Hungary - Slovenia
Under 2.5 goals
