Georgia team overview

Georgia are still searching for their first World Cup appearance. However, they are a team on the rise, which we could see in the UEFA Nations League, where they moved from League D to League B in the past four years. They also secured their first EURO appearance in 2024, where they reached the knockout phase.

In the first game of the WC Qualifiers, Georgia lost 3:2 at home vs Turkey in a tension-filled game. Coach Willy Sagnol even received a red card in the 71st minute and will be suspended for the Bulgaria game. Also, two key players are not with the NT for this qualification cycle due to injuries (Kiteishvili and Chakvetadze).

Bulgaria team overview

Bulgaria haven't had a World Cup appearance since 1998, while they haven't appeared in the EURO since 2004. Right now, they are ranked 84th in the FIFA World Ranking and 38th in Europe out of 55 teams. Before the WC Qualifiers, Bulgaria had the opportunity to move to League B but lost in the Playoff to Ireland on a 4:2 aggregate.

These World Cup Qualifiers started with a big 3:0 loss, but against the reigning EURO champs and one of the best NTs in the World, Spain. After the match, coach Ilian Iliev spoke to the media. He wasn't too discouraged by the defeat and praised his team for the effort and commitment against one of the best teams in the World. The coach said there were some positives and highlighted the debutants Emil Tsenov and Rosen Bozhinov.

Additionally, in the first game vs Spain, we didn't see Kiril Despodov, who remained on the bench. The 28-year-old is one of Bulgaria's best players but is dealing with an injury. His potential absence could be a massive factor in this match.

Prediction

Georgia have been pretty solid in the previous period, winning six out of the last 13 games in all competitions while securing some notable wins over Portugal and the Czech Republic. In these Qualifiers, they lost the first game 3:2 vs Turkey but did not disappoint. Now, they are under pressure to win their second home game against Bulgaria, and we expect them to do well.

Meanwhile, Bulgaria are in terrible form, having failed to win in the last six games while losing four of those. Their defense has been simply atrocious, allowing 14 goals (2.33 per game), and we do not expect that to change overnight. Also, if we exclude the Spain game, they haven't had too challenging schedule.

Considering all the above, we believe the popular Crusaders should secure a comfortable home win over the Lions.

3 Reasons why Georgia should win and cover the -1 AH spread

  1. Georgia won three out of the last five games
  2. Bulgaria lost four of the last five matches across the competitions
  3. Bulgaria won only against Luxembourg in the previous 14 road games
