- Venue: Rams park
A big European night waits in Istanbul on Tuesday. Galatasaray host Liverpool in the first leg of the Champions League round of 16. Rams Park will be loud. Very loud, if history tells us anything. The Lions reached this stage after a chaotic 7–5 aggregate win over Juventus in the playoff round. Liverpool had a calmer route. The Reds finished third in the League Phase and skipped the playoffs.
Bookmakers lean toward Arne Slot’s side. Fair enough. Yet Galatasaray at home in Europe often feel different, and visiting teams usually notice it quickly.

Champions League
Galatasaray and Liverpool have crossed paths three times in the Champions League. The Lions won twice, both nights coming in Istanbul where the crowd tends to change the mood of games. The Reds took the other victory at Anfield. Goals usually appear in this fixture too, averaging roughly 3.67 per match.
Galatasaray team overview
Recent Champions League history for Galatasaray has been uneven. The Lions exited the group stage in five of the last nine campaigns. Two seasons passed without qualification at all. Last year ended early as well, with elimination in the playoff round.
This season feels different. Okan Buruk’s side pushed through to the round of 16 for the first time since 2013–14. On top of that, Galatasaray currently lead the Super Lig. Momentum matters in Europe, or at least it sometimes does.
The Lions were last seen in action on Saturday away to Besiktas. Victor Osimhen struck just after the half hour mark. That goal proved enough in a tight 1–0 win. It marked a third consecutive victory across all competitions.
Home form in Europe adds another layer of confidence. Galatasaray lost only once in the last five Champions League matches at Rams Park, collecting three wins in that stretch.
Leroy Sané saw red in the league on Saturday, yet that suspension does not carry into Europe. Enes Emre Büyük, Arda Ünyay and Batuhan Şen are out with injuries.

Liverpool team overview
Liverpool have become regular visitors to this stage of the Champions League. The Reds reached the round of 16 in eight of the last nine campaigns. The only exception came in 2023–24 when qualification slipped away entirely.
There is a small concern though. On the last three occasions Liverpool reached this stage, the run ended right here. No quarter final. That pattern may sit somewhere in the back of supporters’ minds.
Arne Slot’s side arrive with slightly mixed form, although the numbers are not terrible. Five wins from the last seven matches across all competitions suggests things are ticking along reasonably well.
Liverpool beat Wolves 3–1 in the FA Cup fifth round on Friday. It looked comfortable enough. European away form is also encouraging. The Reds have won seven of the last nine Champions League away fixtures.
Hugo Ekitike sits at the top of Liverpool’s scoring list across all competitions this season. The French forward should return to the starting eleven after a brief rest. Arne Slot’s side will still be without Endo, Bajcetic, Leoni, Bradley and Isak due to injuries.

Prediction
This first leg has the feel of an open contest. Galatasaray have seen each of their last five home matches produce over 3.5 goals, while Liverpool’s recent games also lean toward high scoring outcomes. The Reds travel well in Europe, yet Rams Park can be uncomfortable. A lively evening feels likely. A 2–2 draw looks plausible.
Three reasons we expect three or more goals in this game
- Each of the last five home games of Galatasaray produced over 3.5 goals.
- Nine of the last eleven games of Liverpool finished with more than two goals.
- Two of the last three meetings between Galatasaray and Liverpool produced over 4.5 goals.
Main prediction Galatasaray - Liverpool
