Freiburg host Celta Vigo on Thursday, and it is a bit of a sleeper tie, if you ask me. Schuster’s side arrive after a confident 5–2 aggregate win over Genk. Meanwhile, the Sky Blues edged past Lyon 3–1. Not glamorous, maybe, but still quite compelling.
Freiburg vs Celta Vigo H2H stats
This will be the first meeting between Freiburg and Celta Vigo, which adds a bit of unpredictability. The German side has faced Spanish opposition twice before, both losses to Sevilla. Celta’s record against German clubs is not exactly convincing either, with just one win in six attempts.
Freiburg team overview
Julian Schuster’s side have had moments where everything just clicks. That 5–1 second-leg win over Genk, for example, felt almost clinical, like Freiburg knew exactly when to press and when to punish mistakes. Then came a tighter 2–1 against St Pauli, less flashy but still controlled. And the Bayern game… well, that one is harder to process.
You would think being 2–0 up with 20 minutes left is enough. Usually it is. Yet the Breisgau-Brasilianer let it slip into a 3–2 loss, and that sort of collapse tends to hang around mentally.
Still, zoom out a bit and the picture is steadier. Just two defeats in 19 home games suggests a team that rarely falls apart. Höler, though, is a slight worry. No goals in Europe so far. Rosenfelder and Kyereh missing does not help, but it is manageable.

Celta Vigo team overview
Celta Vigo’s form lately is hard to pin down. One week, the Sky Blues look sharp, beating Lyon in Europe with real intent. Then, almost inexplicably, Giráldez’s side collapse from three goals up to lose 4–3 in La Liga. It leaves you wondering what is going on with their in-game control.
Still, the response mattered. That 3–2 win away at Valencia was not perfect, but it showed some resilience. Maybe that counts for more than style right now. Away from home, Celta Vigo have quietly put together two straight wins. And just one defeat in five games overall is, honestly, respectable.
Ferran Jutglà has seven goals, which sounds decent. Though only one in Europe feels a bit light for a main striker. He should start again, with Álvarez and Durán providing width. Román misses out, but otherwise the squad looks fairly settled.

Prediction
A 2-2 draw feels about right here. Freiburg tend to score freely at home, 12 goals in their last five there says enough. Still, Schuster’s side have shown they can lose control late, like against Bayern. Celta, on the other hand, keep finding goals even in messy games. Put that together and, well, neither side fully convinces defensively.
Three reasons we expect over 2.5 goals
- Six of the last nine games of Freiburg produced over 2.5 goals
- Celta Vigo scored at least twice in five of their last six matches.
- Freiburg scored 12 goals over the course of their last five home games.
Main prediction SC Freiburg - Celta Vigo
Over 2.5 goals
