Freiburg are chasing something that has oddly escaped them since September, a simple pair of league wins in a row. Dortmund arrive with heavier expectations, since a nine point gap to the top makes every weekend feel slightly high stakes for Niko Kovac’s group. I’ll run through how both sides are shaping up, what the squads look like right now and a few betting angles that might be worth your time.

These two have bumped into each other seven times in the league since 2022, and the pattern has been almost embarrassingly one sided. Die Schwarz Gelben won all seven and even stuck five past Freiburg in two of those meetings. Matches between them have averaged nearly five goals, which can make the fixture feel predictable on paper, although football has a way of ruining assumptions when you grow too confident.
Freiburg team overview
Freiburg opened the season reasonably well, picking up nine points from their first seven matches. That steady-but-not-spectacular theme carried into the next stretch of games. Julian Schuster’s side added four more points from four fixtures, a run that unfortunately included a rough 6-2 loss to Bayern. Their last couple of league performances have followed a similar pattern.
Die Breisgauer thrashed Mainz 4-0 two weeks ago without ever looking troubled, yet slipped to a 2-1 defeat at Heidenheim the following weekend. What Freiburg have nailed down, though, is their home form. They head into this Dortmund match on a five game winning streak at the Europa Park across all competitions, which gives the place a very different sort of energy.
Vincenzo Grifo remains their most reliable attacking outlet with eight goals so far and should stay in the forward line. On the absences front, Eren Dinkci and Max Rosenfelder are out with muscle issues, while Daniel Kofi Kyereh might miss out again since his fitness is not quite there yet.

Borussia Dortmund team overview
Dortmund had been eyeing a neat little milestone in midweek, hoping to secure a third straight home win when Bodo Glimt came to visit in Europe.
Plenty of people expected Die Schwarz Gelben to control the game, especially after going ahead twice, but the evening fizzled into a draw that left Kovac visibly annoyed.
Their league form has been a lot healthier. Dortmund come into this one on a six game unbeaten run in the league, with four wins tucked in there, although the picture changes a bit once you look at their away form. The Black and Yellows have slipped up in three of their last five trips, which makes a visit to Freiburg a slightly uneasy prospect since the place is rarely forgiving.
Serhou Guirassy, still their top scorer with nine, only made the bench in the Champions League during the week. He should be back in the starting lineup this time and will likely link up again with Brandt and Adeyemi, which at least gives Dortmund some familiar sharpness in the final third.

Prediction
You can make a pretty decent case for a 2-2 here. Freiburg have been buzzing at home lately, putting up at least two goals in four of their last five at the Europa Park, and Dortmund haven’t gone a single league game this season without scoring. The Black and Yellows still wobble a bit away from home, so it’s easy to picture a match that tilts one way, then the other, before ending all square.
Three reasons we expect over 2.5 goals in this game
- Six of the last seven meetings between Freiburg and Dortmund produced over 3.5 goals.
- Four of the last six games of Dortmund produced three or more goals.
- All the last three home league games of Freiburg produced more than two goals.
Main prediction SC Freiburg - Borussia Dortmund
