London is the setting for Friday’s friendly contest as England take on Uruguay in a World Cup warm-up matchup.

Both nations have secured their place in next summer’s finals, but England have enjoyed stronger form in recent months.

Set to meet for only the second time since 1966, the hosts come into this contest as odds-on favourites to continue their impressive run.

England

England team overview

England face their first fixture of 2026 after enjoying serene progress in their World Cup qualifying campaign. Thomas Tuchel’s side finished top of Group K with a perfect record, securing eight wins from eight.

Particularly strong in defence, the English kept clean sheets in all eight victories, as they qualified for the World Cup without conceding a single goal. Tuchel's side finished ten points clear of nearest rivals Albania.

Over a longer period, the Three Lions have been remarkably consistent in defence, with clean sheets kept in all but one of 12 previous fixtures.

Head coach Thomas Tuchel has a 35-man squad to choose from this week. Arsenal playmaker Eberechi Eze has been forced to withdraw, with Newcastle forward Harvey Barnes earning a first call-up as his replacement.

Real Madrid right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold has again missed out on the squad.

Uruguay

Uruguay team overview

Uruguay make the trip to Wembley following a dismal 5:1 defeat against the USA in their most recent fixture last November. Four goals conceded in a disastrous first-half display piled the pressure on former Leeds United boss Marcelo Bielsa.

Despite securing a fourth-placed finish in their World Cup qualifying campaign, Uruguay have struggled to impress over the past year. The visitors won only five of their last 19 matches.

A lack of quality in the final third remains a serious issue for the Uruguayans. Bielsa's side failed to score in five of their last ten international fixtures. Going back even further, La Celeste have drawn blanks in nine of 16 previous matches. Uruguay scored only 13 goals in those matches.

Head coach Bielsa has a 28-man squad available for the trip to Wembley Stadium. Experienced midfield duo Rodrigo Bentancur and Nahitan Nández are both unavailable for the South Americans.

Prediction

England have been rock solid in defence in the past year, and I expect that pattern to continue in Friday's international friendly fixture.

BTTS - No is my preferred pick from Wembley Stadium.

Three Reasons Why We Expect BTTS - No

  1. England kept a clean sheet in 11 of their last 12 matches
  2. Uruguay failed to score in 5 of their last 10 matches
  3. Uruguay have seen BTTS - No in 8 of theri last 10 matches

Main prediction England - Uruguay
