Egypt have finished top of their group in each of their last two World Cup qualifying campaigns, and are well placed to extend that record. Boasting five wins from six Group A games so far, Salah and Co remain the only undefeated side in the group. 

They have not played since March international break, when they comfortably beat Ethiopia 2–0 before defeating Sierra Leone 1–0.

These two victories extended Hossam Hassan’s side's unbeaten run in competitive matches to 20, so it is unlikely that they will lose this record this week.

The Pharaohs will continue to rely on Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah, who needs just nine more goals to equal the nation’s all-time top scorer, Hossam Hassan.

Ethiopia's last competitive match took place in March, when they hosted Djibouti for the sixth round of matches in Group A of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.

Mesay Teferi’s team put in a stellar performance, winning 6–1, with Abubeker Nassir and Bereket Desta each scoring a hat-trick. That victory ended a four-match losing streak across all competitions, and the Walia will be hoping it marks a turning point in their form.

However, the fact that both of their away games in the Group A World Cup qualifiers ended in a draw will be a major concern ahead of their flight to Egypt.
