Cruzerio are playing their best season in over a decade. They even spent some time in Serie B between 2020 and 2022, but are constantly improving since their return to Serie A in 2023. They finished 14th, 9th, and are now in 2nd place after 22 rounds. They have won 44 points thus far, and are only three points away from the top spot, but have played one game more. However, their performance in the Copa Sudamericana wasn't as good, considering they finished the competition after the group phase.

In the Cup, Cruzeiro only needs to finish the job as they have a two-goal advantage. Right now, the bookies see them as massive favorites, offering odds on them securing the Semi-Finals between 1.01 and 1.05. However, the popular "Raposa" will most likely be without one of their best players, Wanderson. The 30-year-old winger suffered an injury in the previous game vs Sao Paulo and had to leave the field after 73 minutes. Still, Cruzeiro should have good backups in Marquinhos and Luis Sinisterra. 

Atletico Mineiro's results have constantly declined since winning the title in 2020/21. Last year, they won just 47 points in 38 rounds (1.23), and this year, they are actually slightly worse with 24 points in 20 rounds  (1.2). Right now, they are only two points away from the relegation zone, although with two games played fewer. But it seems as time progresses, they are only looking worse, and even though they have good players, there are undoubtedly reasons for concern. 

Due to the bad results, the club decided to sack coach Gabriel Milito and appoint Jorge Sampaoli. The 65-year-old coach was appointed on 2nd September, and this match vs Cruzeiro will be his first since the appointment.
