- Kick-off: 17:00 UK / 18:00 CET
- Venue: Vonovia Ruhrstadion
A German Cup quarter-final place awaits the winner of Bochum against Stuttgart at the Ruhrstadion on Wednesday, with this one of those ties where the bigger picture counts for as much as recent form. Bochum may be drifting in mid-table in the second tier, while the Swabians are comfortably inside the Bundesliga’s top six, yet cup nights have a habit of ignoring hierarchy. The bookmakers lean heavily toward the visitors, of course, although Bochum will quietly remember that their last win in this matchup came on this very pitch.

These sides have met a total of ten times since 2019, with none of the games occurring in the DFB Pokal. More than half of those games went to the Die Schwaben, who notched up seven wins and a couple of draws. Bochum won just once in that sequence, doing so here in January 2024.
Bochum team overview
It was about as bad a way to start the season for Bochum, a bruising 4-1 defeat at home to Darmstadt that more or less established a pattern for the weeks ahead.
Die Unabsteigbaren did construct a small glimmer of hope, downing Elversberg and Dynamo in the league and cup respectively, before a run of six defeats promptly quashed any chance of building momentum.
More recently, the situation has stabilized a little. One defeat in seven means there is something to build on and winning two of their last three at home sends them into Wednesday with some hidden belief ahead of Stuttgart.
Kevin Vogt continues to struggle with a knee problem which has affected him since the early stages of autumn, while Matus Bero is another absentee due to an ankle problem.

VfB Stuttgart team overview
The Reds started with a close Supercup defeat to Bayern that in retrospect appeared to knock the rhythm out of them more than anyone imagined, and there was just one win from their next four.
The mood has changed since. A fantastic six-game stretch brought five wins and served as a reminder of why this team is pushing for the European places.
Their current form has been consistent if not spectacular, but they had gone unbeaten in four before a 2-1 defeat at Hamburg last weekend.
The visitors’ away record may be a concern for their backers, with Stuttgart winning only three of their 11 trips across all competitions this term.
Silas is yet to make his competitive debut since arriving in the summer and will not be involved here. Tiago Tomas and Dan-Axel Zagadou are also still recovering and will remain out.

Prediction
Stuttgart have by far the better league form and they won both of their last two head to head matches 6-0 on aggregate, so it’s hard for me not to think that the visitors will walk away with a win. Bochum have picked up in recent weeks with just one defeat in seven, but their defence are still conceding too regularly against sides of a higher calibre. With Stuttgart’s depth going forward and Bochum’s tendency to score at home, a 2-1 away victory seems like the most likely result.
Three reasons we expect at least three goals in this game
- All the last four games of Stuttgart ended with over 2.5 goals.
- Bets on over 2.5 goals won in each of the last three games of Bochum.
- Four of the last six meetings between Bochum and Stuttgart ended with 3+ goals.
Main prediction -
Over 2.5 goals
