Azerbaijan team overview
Azerbaijan endured a disastrous start on Friday, suffering a 5–0 defeat to Iceland in Reykjavik. Fernando Santos’ men struggled to keep the ball - Iceland held 71% possession - and managed just two shots with an xG of 0.48.
Their poor form stretches back further: no wins in their last 11 matches across all competitions, with the most recent victory coming against Kazakhstan in June 2024. Santos is unlikely to make wholesale changes to the starting XI for Tuesday.

Head coach Serhiy Rebrov is expected to stick with a largely unchanged lineup against Azerbaijan.

Prediction
Azerbaijan’s record in World Cup qualifiers is bleak: no wins in their last 11, and you have to go back to 2017 for their last success - against San Marino, one of FIFA’s lowest-ranked sides. Ukraine, by contrast, went unbeaten in the group phase of World Cup 2022 qualifying (two wins, six draws).
Given Azerbaijan’s long-standing struggles, Ukraine should have enough quality to secure a comfortable victory on Tuesday.
Three reasons we expect Ukraine to Win
- Azerbaijan were swept aside 5–0 by Iceland in their opening match of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.
- They are winless in their last 11 matches across all competitions.
- Azerbaijan have also failed to win any of their past 11 World Cup qualifying fixtures, with their last victory coming against San Marino in 2017.
