Tuesday’s game will mark the fifth meeting between the two teams since 2010. Ireland dominated the previous four meetings, scoring averagely two goals per game and won three. Armenia won only once but that was on home ground. The average number of goals scored per game during this period was 2.5.

Armenia

Armenia team overview

Armenia were looking to end their four-match losing streak when they hosted Cristiano Ronaldo’s Portugal for their opening match in Group F of the World Cup qualifiers last week.

It was another disastrous defensive performance by the Collective team, who conceded five goals without scoring any themselves. Armenia have now lost four of their last five games in all competitions and shipped at least three goals in four of those matches.

Things have not been good at home either for Yegishe Melikyan’s side, who have lost each of their last four competitive home games without scoring.

Republic of Ireland

Republic of Ireland team overview

Meanwhile, Ireland were looking to return to winning ways against Hungary last week after drawing both of their friendlies in June.

The Boys in Green were unable to achieve this, instead having to fight for a draw as they equalised in stoppage time through Idah, despite having played with a man advantage for over 40 minutes.

Although the draw extended the Republic of Ireland's unbeaten run in all competitions to five matches, the fact that the Greens lost two of their last three away games is a major cause for concern ahead of their trip to Armenia.

Evan Ferguson scored his seventh goal for Ireland against Hungary last time out and is expected to lead the line on Tuesday alongside Finn Azaz.

Prediction

One of Armenia’s major problems in recent weeks has been their defence and I think that will be a factor on Tuesday. The hosts have conceded 21 goals in their last five games alone, and they are taking on an Irish side that has scored at least twice in all of their last three competitive matches. We are therefore expecting an entertaining game that could end in a 3-1 victory for the away side.

Three reasons we expect at least three goals in this game

  1. All the last six games of Armenia produced 3+ goals.
  2. All the last four competitive games of Ireland ended with over 2.5 goals.
  3. Two of the last three meetings between Armenia and Ireland ended with 3+ goals.
