On Tuesday evening, two teams that missed out on the Champions League in the previous seasons, Tottenham and Villarreal, will face off in the first round of Europe's best club continental competition. The match will take place at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London.

Let's break down the match and find the best possible bet for this Champions League tie.

Tottenham Hotspur

Tottenham team overview

Tottenham had an absolutely terrible season in the Premier League, finishing 17th! However, they saved the season by winning the Europa League and securing the Champions League that way. Despite finally winning a trophy, the Spurs decided to sack coach Ange Postecoglou on June 6th, and the club appointed Thomas Frank.

This year, the Spurs started well, winning nine points in the first four games, and are currently in 3rd place in the Premier League.

During the international break, the club added Randal Kolo Muani on a loan deal. However, the Frenchman isn't fit because he hasn't trained with PSG and hasn't played in the last game vs West Ham. He will most likely need more time before he starts playing regularly. Also, interestingly, some big names aren't registered for the CL due to injuries (Radu Dragusin, Dejan Kulusevski, James Maddison, and Yves Bissouma), while Mathys Tel isn't registered due to some other reason.

Villarreal

Villarreal team overview

Villarreal secured the Champions League due to a fantastic end of the last season, where they won six straight games. During the offseason, they were pretty active, but it is difficult to predict whether they have gotten better. This year, the popular Yellow Submarine opened the season great, winning seven points in the first three games. However, they suffered their first loss of the season in the last match against Atletico Madrid 2:0. After the game, coach Marcelino spoke to the media. He said the difference in the match was largely due to Atletico Madrid being a lot more clinical. The coach also added that their new signings are still adapting and that they are doing everything to speed up the process.

In the Champions League, the Yellow Submarine will have a really tough schedule at the start as they will face Tottenham, Juventus, and Manchester City in the first three games, and it is important to get at least something from those matches.

Prediction

Tottenham are doing well, winning three out of four games this season, even winning against Manchester City 2:0 at Etihad Stadium. Yes, their loss (1:0) vs Bournemouth was really bad because they were absolutely outplayed, but that is only one game and we can give them a pass. In the other matches, they did very well on both sides of the pitch. In those first four games, they allowed only one goal - 0.25 per game!

Villarreal started the season well, but against mediocre teams and exclusively at home. But in the first two road games, the Yellow Submarine won only one point vs Celta Vigo and Atletico Madrid. We believe they are simply not good enough to compete with the very best teams, especially on the road.

Considering all the above, we believe that the Spurs are a better team and in much better form. Therefore, we expect them to win in this Champions League opener.

3 Reasons why Tottenham should win

  1. Tottenham won three out of four games
  2. Tottenham kept a clean sheet in three out of four matches
  3. Villarreal lost the last game 2:0 vs Atletico Madrid
