The 2025/26 Italian football season gets underway this weekend with the Coppa Italia. Spezia and Sampdoria meet at the Stadio Alberto Picco on Monday in the round of 64, in what will be the first — but not the last — matchup between the two Serie B sides this season.
Last season, Sampdoria were eliminated from the competition in the round of 16 after a 4-1 defeat to AS Roma. Spezia, on the other hand, failed to progress beyond the round of 64, suffering a penalty shootout loss to Salernitana.

Serie A
The two clubs share a long head-to-head history in the top flight of Italian football, but the past couple of seasons have been different. Since 2023, both Spezia and Sampdoria have been competing in Serie B. In three of the last four meetings, Spezia managed to avoid defeat, with Sampdoria’s only win in that period being a 2-1 victory in November 2023.
Spezia team overview
Spezia came very close to earning promotion to Serie A last season, finishing third in the league table before crashing out in the playoffs with a 3-2 aggregate defeat to Cremonese. Their home record was among the best in the 2024/25 campaign — they collected the third-highest points total (40) and lost only three of their 19 home matches.
There are reportedly no injured or suspended players for Spezia ahead of Monday’s game. They are expected to line up in a 3-4-3 formation.

Sampdoria team overview
Sampdoria, on the other hand, fared much worse in Serie B last season. They narrowly avoided direct relegation to Serie C, finishing just two points above Brescia, who ended up in 18th place and went down. They were also among the five worst away teams in the 2024/25 campaign, managing only two wins on the road all season.
Romagnoli, L. Malagrida, and G. Altare are all sidelined with injuries and are not expected to feature.

Prediction
It is always difficult to predict the outcome of the first game of a new season. Spezia and Sampdoria meet in the round of 64 as two representatives of Serie B; however, Spezia enjoyed a much better campaign than Sampdoria last season. They finished third in the league and narrowly missed out on promotion to Serie A, whereas Sampdoria only just avoided relegation to Serie C. Considering that Spezia had the third-best home record last season and have won four of their last five home meetings with Sampdoria, we back a Spezia win on Monday.
Three reasons we expect Spezia to Win
- Spezia had the 3rd best home record in the Serie B last season - only 3 defeats from 19 matches
- Sampdoria had the 5th worst away record in the Serie B last season - only 2 wins from the possible 19
- Spezia are unbeaten in the last 5 matches against Sampdoria at the Stadio Alberto Picco, winning 4 of those encounters
Main prediction -
to win
