Southend's preseason offered little encouragement, with just two wins from six matches. However, the Roots Hall side has started the new campaign in style, winning both opening fixtures, 3-0 against Gateshead and 2-0 against Tamworth. In each game, Southend displayed discipline and organization, emphasizing defensive solidity as the foundation for success.

Southend's head coach, Kevin Maher, was delighted after the victory against Tamworth. He said, "Credit to them for how they do that, but what you have to do is come away with three points, and we've done that. We found a way to win when not at our best, and I think that's important. We could've had one or two more as well."

York City were great last season. However, their playoff campaign ended in disappointment, so the club remained in the fifth tier of English football. This summer brought no major changes to the squad, and supporters are hopeful that stability will translate into another strong promotion push.

York City started the 2025/26 season with four points from the first two rounds. After a disappointing draw against Sutton, York City won 2-0 on the road against Truro. Although the guests were better throughout the game, they needed two goals in the final ten minutes of the match to break the home side and secure all three points. 

After a hard-fought win at Truro, York City head coach Adam Hinshelwood kept it brief, saying that good teams always find a way to win.
