Wednesday night brings a proper cup test in Kiel, with a semi-final spot on the line. Holstein needed penalties to get past Hamburg after a scrappy 1-1 draw, while Stuttgart were far more comfortable, easing past Bochum 2-0. On paper, Die Roten are clear favourites. However, you might hesitate a little, knowing Kiel have avoided defeat in the last two meetings here.

DFB Pokal
You look at the recent history and it feels about right. Five meetings since 2015, two wins each, plus a draw tucked in between. No side has really stamped authority on this matchup. What does stand out, however, is the goals. These games rarely shut down. An average of 3.2 per meeting points to open football and moments at both ends.
Holstein Kiel team overview
Life after relegation has not been smooth for the Storks. Sitting 11th in Bundesliga 2, fourteen points off the promotion places, the dream of an immediate return already feels distant.
Recent form does not help. Just two wins from nine matches, although both came at home, which matters here. Marcel Rapp will lean on that.
Kiel have lost only once in their last eight games at the Holstein-Stadion, and cup nights can shift momentum. Ivan Nekić returns after missing the Fürth defeat through suspension, while Phil Harres, scorer against Hamburg, is expected to lead the line again.
Johansson and Bernhardsson remain out, and Patrick Erras is still being checked after a concussion.

VfB Stuttgart team overview
After wobbling last season, Stuttgart look more like themselves again. Fourth in the Bundesliga and only six points off the top two feels respectable, maybe even promising.
Sebastian Hoeneß’s side arrive on a three-game winning run, scoring seven and conceding two. Away from home, confidence is growing. Four wins from the last five trips, with three goals scored in three of those, says plenty.
Deniz Undav, already on fourteen for the season, should start alongside Jamie Leweling. Injuries persist, though. Dan-Axel Zagadou has been out since November with a muscle problem and Wednesday’s game comes too soon for him.
The hosts’ injury list also includes Tiago Tomás (muscle), Lazar Jovanovic (back) and Fabian Bredlow (calf).

Prediction
Stuttgart feel slightly ahead going into this, maybe just enough for a 2-1 win. Hoeneß’ side are in good rhythm. Three straight victories, seven goals scored, and clean sheets in all of them. Away from home has not been an issue either, with four wins in the last five trips. Kiel are tougher at their own ground, however two wins in nine suggests limits.
Three reasons we expect at least three goals in this game
- Four of the last five meetings between Holstein Kiel and Stuttgart produced 3+ goals.
- Four of the last seven games of VfB Stuttgart ended with three or more goals.
- Bets on over 2.5 goals won in four of the last five games of Holstein Kiel.
Main prediction -
Over 2.5 goals
