After a disappointing third-place finish in the 2024/25 Liga Portugal season, FC Porto are hungrier than ever to reclaim the Portuguese league title after three years without success.
On Monday, they travel to Barcelos to face Gil Vicente at the Estádio Cidade de Barcelos. Both teams began the 2025/26 league campaign with a win, which should make this encounter even more intriguing.

FC Porto have not been as dominant against Gil Vicente as one might expect, given the calibre of the Portuguese giants. In their last six head-to-head meetings, Porto claimed victory three times, but also suffered two defeats and recorded one draw in 2023.
Gil Vicente team overview
Gil Vicente had a below-average season in 2024/25, finishing only 13th in the league standings, although they were never really in danger of relegation. They ended the campaign on a high note by going three games unbeaten, and after securing a win on the opening matchday of the 2025/26 season, they are now on a four-game unbeaten streak.
As for team news, Gil Vicente have one player sidelined through injury — Zé Carlos is set to miss Monday’s game. Based on their regular selection patterns from last season and the start of this one, and factoring in the absence of Zé Carlos, they are expected to line up in a 4-2-3-1 formation.

Porto team overview
The 2024/25 Liga Portugal campaign was not one to remember fondly for FC Porto. For the third season running, the Dragons failed to clinch the Portuguese league title and fell well below their usual standards, finishing 11 points behind eventual winners Sporting Lisbon. The last couple of months in the league, however, were much better performance-wise, as Porto recorded six wins from a possible seven. More importantly, they have won three of their last four away league matches.
Porto have not suffered any fresh injuries and are expected to incorporate a couple of new signings into the starting XI. A 4-3-3 tactical setup is anticipated.

Prediction
Even though FC Porto endured a fairly miserable 2024/25 season by their own high standards, they remain clearly superior to Gil Vicente in almost every department. Adding to the case for Porto, Gil Vicente struggled at home last season, managing only 5 wins from a possible 17. Porto have defeated Gil Vicente in three of their last five meetings at the Estádio Cidade de Barcelos, with their only setback being a 3-1 loss in 2025 — a match in which they had two players sent off. All things considered, Porto should be expected to maintain their perfect record this season with a win over Gil Vicente on Monday.
Three reasons we expect FC Porto to Win
- FC Porto have won 7 of their last 8 league matches, including last season
- FC Porto have won 3 of their last 4 league matches away from home
- FC Porto defeated Gil Vicente at the Estádio Cidade de Barcelos in 3 of their last 5 H2H meetings
Main prediction -
to win
