- Venue: RCDE Stadium
Espanyol head into Friday night feeling like things need a small course correction. Four matches without a win have dulled the mood a little, even if the season as a whole has been better than most expected. Check the table and Los Periquitos are still fifth, still hovering in the conversation near the top. Alavés see it differently. Staying up is the only priority. Thirteen points sit between them, though recent results make that margin feel far less comfortable than it sounds.

La Liga
Since 2018, these sides have met 10 times in La Liga. Espanyol have shaded it, five wins and four clean sheets hinting at control more than dominance. Alavés have taken three victories, including the reverse fixture back in November, with two draws filling in the rest. Goals are usually in short supply. Just over two per game on average tells you what kind of fixture this tends to be.
Espanyol team overview
Espanyol’s return to the top flight in 2023-24 feels further back than it really is. Last season was about scraping by, finishing just two points clear of trouble.
This year has been a different story. Manolo González has them fifth and looking organised, if not always fluent. The recent run has been hard to ignore.
Four games without a win, three defeats, and a back line that has now leaked goals in five straight outings. That 3–2 loss at Valencia felt like the tipping point. Too loose at the back, especially when the game was there to be managed.
Home, however, has a way of settling Espanyol down. Four of their last five wins over Alavés have come at the RCDE Stadium, and this ground has often been where momentum is rebuilt.
Pere Milla, already on six league goals, should line up again with Roberto Fernández, who keeps chipping in without much fuss. Javi Puado is still a long way from returning, but at least González does not have any suspensions to juggle.

Deportivo Alaves team overview
Alavés have been living on the edge for a while now. Promotion in 2023 was followed by a respectable tenth place finish, yet last season’s slide to 15th felt like a warning.
Eduardo Coudet’s side sit there again, 22 points from 21 games.
The 2-1 win over Betis last weekend halted a worrying slide, but the road form still tells a grim story. Seven straight away defeats. No goals in four of those. Recent trips to Barcelona have not helped either.
Toni Martínez and Lucas Boyé are expected to continue together up front, both sitting on four league goals. With no fresh injuries picked up last time out, Coudet is likely to keep faith in the same eleven.

Prediction
A narrow Espanyol win feels likely here. Los Periquitos have beaten Alavés in four of the last five meetings at the RCDE Stadium, keeping clean sheets in most of those games. Alavés arrive having lost seven straight away league matches and failed to score in four of them. One goal may well be enough. A 1-0 home win fits the pattern.
Three reasons we expect under 2.5 goals in this game
- Six of the last eight meetings between Espanyol and Alaves at this ground ended with under 2.5 goals.
- Deportivo Alaves failed to score in five of their last seven away games in the Spanish top flight.
- Espanyol scored only once in their last three home games in La Liga.
Main prediction Espanyol - Alaves
Under 2.5 goals
