- Date: Thursday, 21st, August 2025
- Kickoff: 19:45 UK / 20:45 CEST
- Venue: Pittodrie Stadium (Aberdeen)
Thursday night sees Aberdeen face FCSB at Pittodrie Stadium, where the sides meet in the opening leg of their Europa League playoff encounter.
The Romanian side seeks redemption in UEFA’s second-tier competition after their UCL exit, while Aberdeen aim to reach the group or league phase for the second time in three years.
Aberdeen team overview
A fifth-place finish in last season’s Premiership brought no rewards, but Aberdeen still earned their place on the European stage thanks to a memorable Scottish Cup run, overcoming all obstacles — including Celtic on penalties — to end a 35-year wait for silverware.
Unfortunately for the Dons, their start to the new domestic campaign has been far from ideal, suffering a 2-0 defeat to Hearts on the opening day before falling by the same scoreline against reigning champions Celtic on matchday two.
While they remain without a point or a goal in the Scottish top flight, Jimmy Thelin’s side managed to inject some positivity into their campaign by cruising to a 3-0 victory over Championship outfit Greenock Morton in the League Cup opener.
Ahead of their midweek European clash, Aberdeen have strengthened their attack by signing Marko Lazetic from AC Milan, though the young Serbian forward is expected to start on the bench with Kusini Yengi the preferred striker.

FCSB team overview
Aberdeen may be at the start of their new campaign, but FCSB come into this clash battle-hardened, having launched their season back in early July and claiming the Romanian Super Cup thanks to a 2-1 triumph against CFR Cluj.
After their initial triumph, the Red and Blues have been mired in a winless slump, securing only four victories from 13 games to date, just one in league play, as they face a challenging opening phase of the season with a meagre five points from six top-tier fixtures.
After Shkendija handed them an early exit from the Champions League in the second qualifying round, Elias Charalambous’ side shifted their focus to Europa League duties, comfortably overcoming their opening hurdle with an emphatic 6-2 aggregate victory over Kosovan outfit Drita.
Unlike their Scottish rivals, FCSB will face several absences for Thursday’s clash, as Joyskim Dawa, Risto Radunovic, key midfielder Adrian Sut, and experienced striker Denis Alibec are all sidelined with injuries.

Prediction
Both teams enter Thursday's clash following weak starts to their seasons, but with clear ambitions to secure a spot in the Europa League. It is difficult to give an edge to either side in this encounter, so a draw in the first match would not be surprising. Romanian side FCSB have struggled to find their best rhythm and form recently, suffering five defeats in their last eight matches across all competitions, but their European experience is on their side. Considering Aberdeen’s own struggles at the start of the 2025-26 season, a draw looks the most likely outcome for the first leg, as neither side appears strong enough to enter the return fixture with a advantage.
Three Reasons we expect Draw
- Aberdeen have suffered two defeats in the opening trio of matches this new season.
- FCSB have been beaten in five of their last eight competitive matches.
- There is little to separate the two sides at the moment.
