These two sides last met at this same ground in 2017. The Premier League match finished 2:2 with Sunderland extending their winless streak against West Ham to eight games. It was also the fifth draw in eight games between the two teams — West Ham won three times. That spell was not particularly entertaining as just two of the eight games ended with more than two goals.

Sunderland team overview

Sunderland had a disappointing end to their 2024–25 Championship campaign, losing all of their final five league games and failing to score in all but one of them.

There was still a chance to secure promotion through the play-offs and the Black Cats seized the opportunity. After beating Coventry 3:2 on aggregate in the semi-finals, they defeated Sheffield United 2:1 in the final but things are expected to be tough in the Premier League.

As part of their preparations for Premier League football, the club has made multiple signings, including Granit Xhaka, Reinildo Mandava and Simon Adingra.

Luke O'Nien, Aji Alese, Dennis Cirkin, Leo Hjelde, Niall Huggins and Romaine Mundle will miss Friday’s game due to injury.

West Ham United team overview

West Ham United had a much better end to last season, losing only one of their final games, which was against the surprise package of the campaign, Nottingham Forest.

The Hammers picked up wins against Manchester United and Ipswich Town and there were glimpses of that form during their pre-season campaign.

Graham Potter’s side lost only one of their five friendlies, beating Everton, Bournemouth and Grasshoppers.

Crysencio Summerville missed the entire preseason due to a thigh injury and Saturday’s game comes too soon for the winger.

Prediction

West Ham United have not lost any of their last eight matches against Sunderland, although they have only won three of them. Sunderland will give their all in their first fixture back in the top flight, so it's set to be a close game. Also, since only one of the last ten matches between the two teams saw more than two goals, I am backing under 2.5 goals.

Three reasons we expect under 2.5 goals in this game

  1. Five of the last six league meetings between Sunderland and West Ham at this ground ended with under 2.5 goals.
  2. Four of the last seven away Premier League games of West Ham United ended with under 2.5 goals.
  3. Bets on under 2.5 goals won in each of the last six competitive home games of Sunderland.
