Sunday afternoon brings the first heavyweight clash of the 2025/26 English Premier League as Manchester United host last season’s runners-up, Arsenal, at Old Trafford.
Rúben Amorim’s men will be looking to put the misery of last season behind them and strive for a finish in the European places at the very least. The Gunners, meanwhile, came close to finally lifting the Premier League trophy but fell short to Liverpool, and will therefore be aiming to take one step further and end a 20-year drought.

Manchester United team overview
The 2024/25 Premier League campaign was one to forget for everyone at Manchester United. The Red Devils suffered a staggering 18 defeats in 38 games and managed only two wins in their final ten league matches. They also had the seventh-worst home record in the division, with just seven wins in 19 matches, and won only once in their last five outings at Old Trafford.
Manchester United have had one major departure this summer — local boy Marcus Rashford, who has joined FC Barcelona. However, the arrivals of Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo should help strengthen the Red Devils’ attack.

Arsenal team overview
Arsenal, on the other hand, enjoyed a much more successful campaign in 2024/25. They recorded the same number of losses as Liverpool — four in the entire season — but 14 draws, the joint-second most in the Premier League, ultimately killed any chance of lifting the title. Still, Arsenal were the second-best team away from home last season, collecting 35 points and earning the third-most wins, behind only Liverpool and Nottingham Forest.
Arsenal have also had a busy summer transfer window, with Viktor Gyökeres being the main talking point ahead of the new season. Noni Madueke and Martín Zubimendi have also joined the Gunners, while Kieran Tierney and Jorginho have departed.

Prediction
Arsenal have finally overcome their inferiority complex when facing Manchester United in recent seasons. They have lost only once in the last six head-to-head league encounters with the Red Devils, winning on four occasions, and are currently unbeaten in two consecutive games at Old Trafford. These stats, along with the additional fact of 14 unbeaten away matches, should give the Gunners plenty of confidence ahead of Sunday’s trip to Manchester. We predict a win for Arsenal on the opening day of the 2025/26 Premier League season.
Three reasons we expect Arsenal to Win
- Arsenal have won 4 of their last 6 Premier League matches against Manchester United
- Arsenal have avoided a defeat in 2 consecutive matches against Manchester United at Old Trafford
