- Competition: La Liga
- Date: Sunday, 17th August, 2025
- Kickoff: 18:30 UK / 19:30 CEST
- Venue: Estadio San Mamés (Bilbao)
After around a three-month break, La Liga will restart. In the opening round, one of the most interesting games will probably be between Athletic Bilbao and Sevilla. The primary goal for both teams this season is to finish in the upper part of the league's table and secure Europe, but there is a question whether that is a realistic goal for Sevilla after such an underwhelming last year.

La Liga
In the previous two seasons, Athletic Bilbao won three and once was a draw. Sevilla's last win was back in April 2023. However, despite failing to win in the last four games, Sevilla did play pretty well in those matches, much better than the final result shows.
When it comes to the number of goals, we have constantly seen low-scoring matches. These teams were under 2.5 goals in nine consecutive h2h matches.
Athletic Bilbao team overview
Athletic Bilbao's results constantly improved over the years. In the last season, they secured fourth place, which is their best placement since the 2013/14 season, when they also finished fourth. By finishing fourth, the Basque team managed to return to the Champions League after over a decade!
During the offseason, the club hasn't been too active. For now, one of their best players, Nico Williams, stayed despite major interest from teams like Barcelona and Bayern Munich. Even though they kept the core of the team, the Basque team had a terrible pre-season, result-wise, losing six out of seven friendly matches.

Sevilla team overview
While Bilbao's results constantly improved over the years, Sevilla's results heavily declined. From a team that made deep European runs and battled for the Champions League, the Andalusian team now looks more like a relegation contender. The last year was an absolute disaster as they finished 17th - only one point away from relegation.
During the Summer transfer window, the Andalusian team did not make massive moves. They only added two players on free transfers (Alfon Gonzalez and Gabriel Suazo), along with one loan transfer (Odysseas Vlachodimos). Meanwhile, Suso, Albert Sambi Lokonga, and Saul Niguez left the team. So, overall, they haven't improved the team much, but we still expect a bit better season compared to last year.

Prediction
Surprisingly, Athletic Bilbao had an absolutely disastrous pre-season in terms of results. They won the first match vs Ponferradina, and they lost six in a row, although against good competition. But despite losing that many matches, they managed to score in five of those seven matches (71%). However, tthose are only friendlies, and we believe the Basque team will do a better job when it matters the most. Last year, in 27 home games, they scored at least a goal in 21 matches - 78%.
Sevilla had a better pre-season, result-wise, but they also faced weaker opponents. "Los Hispalenses" scored at least a goal in all seven games but also struggled to keep a clean sheet, doing that just once. They were eventually superb for this type of bet as six of their seven games ended with both teams scoring.
The last time these teams met at Estadio San Mamés in Bilbao, we saw a 1:1 draw. Considering all the above, we believe that both teams to score is the safest option for this La Liga tie.
4 Reasons why we should see both teams scoring
- Four of the last five of Bilbao's friendlies ended with BTTS
- Athletic Bilbao scored at least one goal in 78% of their home games last year
- Both teams scored in six out of seven of Sevilla's friendlies
- Both teams scored in the previous h2h game at Estadio San Mamés in Bilbao
