Aston Villa were close to another place in the Champions League, but they lost due to a worse goal difference than Newcastle. However, the club from Villa Park had another good top-six season and shouldn't see that as failure. Aston Villa had some problems during the preseason this summer, as they won only three of eight matches, but improved in the last tests. In the most recent outing, Unai Emery's team won 2-0 against Villarreal. 

Aston Villa didn't change too much this summer. The most important players stayed in the club. On the other hand, Unai Emery's team signed Evann Guessand from Nice for 30 million euros. Center-forward last season had 12 goals and nine assists in 33 Ligue 1 matches. 

It is too early in the summer transfer window, and Aston Villa are likely to make a few more moves. There are speculations that they could bring back Marco Asensio after an impressive loan in the previous season. Aston Villa are also interested in Club Brugge's defender Joel Ordonez. 

Aston Villa will be without Emiliano Martinez, Morgan Rogers, Ross Barkley, and Andres Garcia Robledo on Saturday against Newcastle. 

After the 2023/24 season, in which Newcastle weren't on their level, the Magpies played better last year. They sneaked into the top five teams in the Premier League and will return to the Champions League. However, Newcastle are not looking well right now, as they had a terrible preseason with two draws and four defeats. In the last test, Newcastle lost 2-0 against Atletico Madrid. 

Although Newcastle made a few interesting transfers this summer, the focus is on whether Alexander Isak forces his way out of St. James' Park. The Swedish striker, who scored 23 Premier League goals in 34 matches last season, wants to join Liverpool, but Newcastle rejected the initial offer. Isak is adamant that he will not play for Newcastle anymore and will surely skip the opening round at Villa Park. 

Newcastle's biggest additions this summer are Anthony Elanga (who came from Nottingham Forest) and Malick Thiaw (AC Milan). However, there are rumors that Newcastle could add Jacob Ramsey, Bilal El Khannouss, and Yoanne Wissa. Newcastle will certainly need offensive reinforcement if Isak leaves the club. 

Besides Isak, Newcastle will also be without Joseph Willock in the upcoming tie. Anthony Gordon might skip the game as well, but his status is currently unclear.
