  • Venue: Red Bull Arena (Salzburg)

After ten consecutive titles in Austria, Red Bull Salzburg last year finished second, two points behind Sturm Graz. By finishing second, they had to go through the Qualifiers, where they eliminated Twente and Dynamo Kyiv. Unfortunately for them, they started the season terribly in the CL League Phase, where Sparta Prague dismantled them 3:0 in the Czech Republic. By losing to Sparta, Red Bull Salzburg are under pressure to win all three points against Brest to have some chances of reaching the next stage. Meanwhile, in the Bundesliga, Salzburg are 4th with 13 points in six rounds. However, they played two games fewer than 1st-placed Strum Graz and are only three points away.

Brest had a fantastic season, finishing 3rd and securing the Champions League for the first time ever in the 121-year-old history. However, "The Pirates" had a poor start this season, as they are in 12th place with just six points in six rounds. The main issue this year appears to be their performance away from home. Meanwhile, in contrast to a poor Ligue 1 start, Brest had an excellent start in the Champions League, winning against the Austrian champs, Sturm Graz. With a potential win, Brest would massively increase their chances of securing the Playoffs in their first season in the CL.

Red Bull Salzburg vs Brest pick: Salzburg to win

After a debacle against Sparta Prague, Red Bull Salzburg bounced back with seven points in three games while keeping a clean sheet in all three games. This year, at Red Bull Arena, Salzburg were excellent, winning three out of four games. They only failed to win against Dynamo Kyiv (1:1), but they already had a two-goal lead from the first game and weren't interested in attacking too much.

Most of Brest's good results this year happened at home. Away from home, Brest were terrible, losing all three games in Ligue 1 while scoring just one goal - 0.3 per game. The last game against Auxerre (3:0 loss) showed Brest's vulnerability away from home and it is hard to expect a good performance against RB Salzburg.

Salzburg are a much more experienced team in Europe. Combined with Brest's terrible road record this year and Salzburg's home-pitch advantage, we believe that the Austrians should secure a comfortable win at Red Bull Arena.

Red Bull Salzburg team news

After a 2:0 win against Austria Vienna, coach Pepijn Lijnders spoke to the media. He said he was happy with how they played, especially in the second half when they were much more in control. The coach was also asked about playing games every three or four days, but he wasn't really worried and said it is a good thing for them.

Six players who missed the previous games should remain sidelined - Maurits Kjaergaard, Daouda Guindo, Takumu Kawamura, Fernando, Aleksa Teric, and Samson Baidoo. The last two (Terzic and Baidoo) are the closest to making a return, but according to credible sources, they will be out for at least a couple more weeks.

Brest

Brest team news

Coach Eric Roy wasn't on the bench in the previous game against Auxerre because he served one of his three-game ban in Ligue 1 for commenting on referees. However, after a terrible 3:0 loss against Auxerre, the coach was furious. He openly criticized players and said that only one or two players played on a desirable level.

The team should have no new injuries, but Bradley Locko and Pierre Lees-Melou, who are out with long-term injuries, should remain sidelined.
