Benfina will play the third of their six warm up games for the 2024-25 Primeira Liga campaign on Sunday afternoon when they face Almeria in Thonon-les-Bains, France.
The Eagles failed to defend their 2022-23 Portuguese top flight title last season. Benfica finished ten points behind winners Sporting in second place, but the team had a great run in Europe. Roger Schmidt’s men kicked off their preseason friendlies with a 5-star display against Farense last week in Portugal where they scored five goals without reply. Their second friendly saw them play out a 2-2 draw with Celta Vigo and we are likely to see another entertaining game this weekend.
Almeria meanwhile had a La Liga campaign to forget. La Unión Almeriensistas saw their eight appearance in the Spanish top flight end in relegation as they finished in the bottom two. With an immediate return to La Liga the objective for the 2024-25 campaign, boss Rubi will use the four scheduled preseason friendlies to prepare in the best possible way.
Benfica vs Almeria Betting Tips: Over 2.5 goals
Benfica’s games towards the end of last season were packed with plenty of entertainment. Seven of their final ten fixtures of the 2023-24 campaign produced more than two goals, and we have already seen similar outcomes in their two preseason friendlies so far.
One of the major weaknesses of Almeria last season was their defence. Indeed, Rubi’s side conceded more goals than all La Lida sides except for Granada. Each of their last two encounters ended with at least four goals, and I fancy a similar result in France on Sunday.
- Best Tip: Over 2.5 goals
- Benfica vs Almeria prediction: 3-2
Benfica team news
Tomás Araújo will once again be unavailable to Benfica head coach Roger Schmidt this weekend due to injury.
Araújo has been struggling with an ankle injury that has seen him missed the last six games and the centre back is not the Eagles only injury concern.
David Neres and Marcos Leonardo are also in the treatment room with muscle and knee injuries respectively.
