Since returning to the English top-flight division in 2012/13, West Ham have been mostly a mid-table team. Last year, they finished ninth with 52 points, but not too close to securing Europe. After a 1:0 over Bournemouth, coach Julen Lopetegui spoke to the media. He said that the most important thing is that they advanced to the next round of the Carabao Cup. The Spaniard also said both teams had chances, but they were fortunate to score late in the game. In the previous game against Ipswich Town, Mateo Kovacic suffered an injury and had to leave the field after 50 minutes. Coach Pep Guardiola said it was only a knock, hinting he would be ready for the upcoming game against West Ham.
