On Friday evening, two Hampshire teams, Eastleigh and Southampton, will face off in their second and first preparation game this preseason.
Eastleigh will play its 11th consecutive season in the National League, the fifth tier of English football. During that stretch, the Spitfires were in the mid or lower part of the league's table. Last year, they finished 13th with 59 points, once again pretty far from the Playoffs. This year, there are no signs that the Spitfires will have a significantly better season. In fact, we believe they got slightly worse over the Summer window.
Southampton managed to return to the English top-flight division last year. Even though many football pundits predicted the Saints would secure promotion directly, they had to do it via Playoffs, where they beat another English giant in the Finals - Leeds Utd. During this preseason, the Saints were pretty aggressive, and we expect even more arrivals. Still, whether that will be enough to secure survival in the Premier League remains to be seen.
Eastleigh vs Southampton pick: Over 3.5 goals
Eastleigh played one friendly against Wimborne and were easily over this line, winning 4:2. So, if they allowed two goals against poor Wimborne, it is fair to expect at least three or four against a Premier League side. On the other side, Eastleigh might even score in this match (especially in the second half) because Southampton will most likely try different options in their first game of the preseason.
Last year in the Championship, Southampton were a team with the highest goal-per-game average at 3.3. They were a team that could both score and concede a lot, making them great for an over 2.5/3.5 bet. Additionally, last year, the Saints scored 87 goals in 46 rounds - 1.9 per game.
Considering all the above, we believe that an over 3.5 goals bet is the best option for this Hampshire duel.
Eastleigh team news
Twelve players left the team during the transfer window. A few of them were key players last year: George Langston, Enzio Boldewijn, Nigel Atangana, Oscar Rutherford, and Luke Croll. Most of those players were important for Eeastleigh's defense, so we expect them to have big problems in that department if something doesn't change soon.
On the positive side, six players arrived at the club. One to keep an eye on is Tyrese Shade, who scored a goal in his first game for Eastleigh.

Southampton team news
Southampton were pretty active during this transfer window. Seven players arrived at the club, but undoubtedly the biggest prospect among them is Taylor Harwood-Bellis, who came from Manchester City for 23 million euros. The 22-year-old spent his last season on a loan deal in Southampton and was one of the best players on the team, so his arrival wasn't a surprise.
On the other hand, one of the surprising departures was of Che Adams, who was the second-best goalscorer last year. He scored 17 goals in 26 appearances.
The team's best goalkeeper, Gavin Bazunu, suffered an Achilles Tendon injury in April 2024 and will be sidelined for the remainder of the year.
