Championship action returns to Vicarage Road on Friday as mid-table Watford host automatic promotion contenders Burnley in a crucial Easter matchup.

Watford return to Vicarage Road after a 2:1 away loss suffered at West Brom last weekend, their third defeat in five matches, leaving them 11th in the table and seven points adrift of the playoff spots. 

Despite a recent 1:0 home win over Hull City, Tom Cleverley’s side have struggled for consistency, particularly at home, where they've lost six of their last ten matches. ​

In contrast, Burnley are in formidable form. The Clarets boosted their automatic promotion hopes with a 2:1 win against Norwich City in their last outing, extending their unbeaten run to eight matches.

Scott Parker’s men have been exceptional defensively this season, conceding just 13 goals in 42 league matches and keeping clean sheets in 13 of their last 18 games. Sitting joint top of the division with 88 points, the Clarets have lost just twice in 42 league games this season. Their away form is also impressive, with three wins picked up from their last four on the road. ​

Burnley also hold the upper hand in recent matches against Watford, scoring four victories while losing just one of seven previous encounters. Parker's side claimed a 2:1 win in the reverse meeting at Turf Moor last December.

Given their contrasting form and Burnley's defensive solidity, I expect the in-form visitors to claim another vital victory in the race for Championship promotion.
