  • Competition: Champions League Qualifiers, 2nd Round, 2nd Leg
  • Date: Tuesday, 30th July, 2024
  • Kickoff: 19:00 UK / 20:00 CEST
  • Venue: Park Hall (Oswestry)

After a dominant 5:0 victory in the first leg of the UEFA Champions League's second Qualifying Round, Hungarian champions Ferencvaros will travel to Wales for the second leg against Welsh champions TNS. The game will take place at Park Hall in Oswestry.

TNS have been great in recent years in the domestic league, winning 11 league titles in the last 13 years. Even when they did not win the title, they were the runner-up. However, their European campaigns have been less impressive. TNS have never advanced to the group stage of any European competition or reached the playoff round of the qualifiers. In the first leg against Ferencvaros, no one gave them a chance, but such a blowout was a surprise regardless. Now, their only motive in the upcoming match is to deliver a more competitive performance and conclude their Champions League qualifiers on a positive note.

Ferencvaros are the most successful club in Hungary, with 35 league titles. In recent years, they have been dominant, winning six titles in a row. But besides their success in the domestic competition, they are also doing great in Europe. In the last season, they reached the knockout phase of the Conference League, and in the year before, they reached the knockout phase of the Europa League.

TNS vs Ferencvaros pick: Ferencvaros to win and cover the -1.5 AH spread

In the first leg, Ferencvaros absolutely dismantled TNS and dominated every aspect of the game. It looked like they could score a goal whenever they wanted, and a 5:0 win was a fair result at the end. TNS had a couple of good chances, even hitting a crossbar on occasion, but the quality between the teams is massive, and we do not expect that will change much just because of the home pitch advantage for TNS.

When we take a closer look at TNS's home games in Europe, we cannot speak about some kind of enormous advantage. In the last two years, they played four games with a 1-1-2 score. Notably, those two losses came against teams much weaker than Ferencvaros (Vikingur and Hacken), with both defeats being by a two-goal margin.

Considering all the above, we firmly believe that Ferencvaros should secure a comfortable win and cover the -1.5 AH spread.

TNS team news

After a 5:0 in the first leg, coach Craig Harrison spoke to the media. He said he would be lying if he said that he wasn't disappointed with the result. However, the coach pointed out the players' attitude. "They [Ferencvaros] are a very good team but I'm proud of our players and the way that they handled themselves, their professionalism and attitude and work ethic," the coach added. Harrison also noted it would be hard to overcome a five-goal deficit but said they just want to win the second game.

Ferencvaros team news

In the first leg, central defender Raul Gustavo and starting midfielder Digbo Maiga suffered injuries and had to leave the field about ten minutes before the end of the match. Since Ferencvaros have a five-goal advantage, coach Pascal Jansen will most likely rest both.

Besides Gustavo and Maiga, the team will also miss their best striker, Barnabas Varga, who did not play in the first leg either. The 29-year-old was incredible last year, scoring 29 and assisting 12 goals in 40 appearances. Varga sustained a head injury while playing for Hungary at EURO 2024 and still isn't 100% ready.
