A tense occasion should be on the cards when fallen giants Sampdoria welcome Salernitana to Genoa for the first-leg of the relegation playoffs.

European Cup finalists in the early 90s, La Samp now find themselves fighting to avoid a first-ever relegation to Italy's third-tier after a disastrous Serie B season. Having finished in the bottom four and with relegation confirmed, Sampdoria will instead face Salernitana in a two-legged playoff to avoid their first-ever relegation to Serie C, after Brescia’s eight-point deduction handed them a late lifeline.

Now led by their fourth coach of the season, Alberico Evani's side face the first-leg on Sunday in decent form after finishing the season with two wins and three draws in their final six fixtures. 

A lack of firepower has led to several low-scoring outcomes for the home side. Under 2.5 goals were scored in six of I Blucerchiati's last seven games, and in seven of their eight previous matches at Stadio Comunale Luigi Ferraris.

Salernitana arrive in Genoa after finishing the Serie B season one point ahead of Sampdoria in 17th spot. Competing in Serie A just two seasons ago, the Maroons could return to Serie C for the first time this century if they are unable to overcome Samp in the coming days. 

Pasquale Marino's men finished the season in strong form, claiming victories in four of their last six outings. Despite that fine form, Salernitana were unable to escape the bottom four and this week's subsequent playoff contest.

Like Sampdoria, low-scoring outcomes have been regular occurrences for the Maroons. Each of their last four games, and their six previous away fixtures finished with under 2.5 goals scored. I expect the same outcome on Sunday.

Under 2.5 goals is my only choice for what is sure to prove a particularly tense occasion in Genoa.
