In the last round of the UEFA Nations League Women, Portugal W and Belgium W will face off at Estádio do Marítimo in Funchal in their attempt to avoid direct relegation from League A.
The results of Portugal's women's national team have improved over the years. From a team that has never appeared in any major tournament, they managed to secure the previous World Cup appearance along with two Euros. To be fair, they did not impress in those competitions, but qualifying itself shows their process. They've also booked a spot in their third consecutive EURO, which will be held in June. However, this Nations League campaign has been tough for Portugal. Drawn in a group with England (EURO champions) and Spain (World Cup winners), it's no surprise they're battling relegation. Currently third with four points, they sit in the relegation playoff spot — just one point above Belgium. A draw in the last game will be enough for Portugal to stay in third place.
Belgium are a team that has never appeared in the World Cup but did well in the previous European Championships. That was especially the case in the 2023 EURO when they reached the Quarter-Finals. Also, with good EURO Qualifiers, they managed to secure another EURO where they will be in Group with Spain, Portugal, and Italy. When it comes to the UEFA Nations League, Belgium struggled and is on the brink of relegation. To avoid it, they have to win all three points against Portugal.
Portugal W vs Belgium W pick: Portugal W to win
These teams were most dominated by the other two teams in the Group, England and Spain. However, that is hardly a surprise, considering they are among the best in Europe and the World. But, in the h2h duel, Portugal did much better and won 1:0 away from home.
Also, Portugal have been excellent at home, losing once in the last nine games. They managed to draw 1:1 with England and did not embarrass themselves against Spain, the reigning World Cup champs, considering they lost "only" 4:2. Meanwhile, Belgium, similarly to Portugal, played their best football at home. Away from it, they only had one win in the last five. In fact, even that one win was against Ukraine, which played their home games on a neutral pitch in Turkey.
Considering the result from the first h2h earlier, Portugal's excellent home performances, and Belgium's struggles away from home, we believe the hosts are much closer to winning the game.
