- Date: 2nd August 2025
- Kick-off: 15:00 UK / 16:00 CEST
- Venue: Home Park
Plymouth Argyle and Barnsley will face off at Home Park on Saturday afternoon, both sides looking to start the new English third-tier campaign with a win. The Pilgrims are favourites to win the fixture at their home ground, having won three of their final four home games of the 2024-25 campaign. Barnsley can't be underestimated, though, as they lost just one of their five pre-season fixtures.

Saturday’s game at Home Park will be only the sixth meeting between the two teams since 2010. Barnsley dominated the previous five, picking up two wins and two draws, while Plymouth won once. There wasn’t much entertainment on offer, with only two of those games producing more than two goals.
Plymouth Argyle team overview
Plymouth Argyle’s two-year stint in the English Championship came to an end last season, after they finished in 23rd place.
The Pilgrims did manage to finish the season strongly, winning a couple of matches in the final month and they showed a similar fighting spirit during pre-season.
Tom Cleverley’s side won two of their four pre-season matches, scoring nine goals in the two victories, and will be hoping to maintain that form on Saturday afternoon.
The hosts prepare Barnsley's visit without centre back Brendan Galloway, who has been out since January with a leg injury.

Barnsley team overview
Barnsley have played in the third tier of English football since the 2022:23 season. The Reds didn’t come close to securing promotion last season and also had a poor end to the season, winning only two of their last 12 matches.
But after picking up two wins and two draws from their five preseason games, they will certainly be feeling optimistic about putting a smile on their fans' faces this weekend.
Regarding injuries, the visitors are without centre-back duo Josh Earl and Marc Roberts, who have been out since December.

Prediction
Plymouth Argyle found the back of the net nine times in their last three games alone but I don’t think they will get carried away by that on Saturday and play an open game. The Pilgrims lost their last match against Barnsley without scoring, and have only scored two goals in the last five head-to-head meetings. All five of these encounters ended with fewer than 3.5 goals, and I expect a similar outcome at Home Park on Saturday.
Three reasons we expect under 3.5 goals
- Only one of the last eight meetings between Plymouth and Barnsley produced 3+ goals.
- Bets on under 3.5 goals won in five of the last eight games of Barnsley.
- Seven of the last eight competitive games of Plymouth ended with under 3.5 goals.
Main prediction -
Under 3.5 goals
