The offseason is almost over. In their first game of the season, Nice will host Benfica, who come into the match after winning the Super Cup against Sporting CP. Nice are aiming for their first-ever Champions League group stage appearance, while Benfica are one of the most experienced teams at that level. However, this year's path to the group stage will be tough - starting with a challenging duel in the third qualifying round against Nice.

vs Head to Head (H2H) stats

  1. Benfica

    3 : 0

    OGC Nice

    Club Friendlies 3

Thus far, these teams haven't matched in an official match in their history. The only two h2h matches were friendlies, in 2022 and 2013, with Benfica winning on both occasions, 3:0 and 2:1.

Nice team overview

For the previous two seasons, Nice finished fifth and fourth in the French Ligue 1. In the previous one, the Eaglets were super close to securing third place in Ligue 1 and the Champions League Group phase for the first time ever. However, they missed it by one point and will now have to acquire the CL appearance through the Qualifiers.

During the pre-season, the Eaglets did very well, winning four out of six games (67%). However, looking at their transfer activity, we believe they haven't improved compared to the last season. Therefore, the bookies do not trust them in this duel against Benfica, offering odds between 3.0 and 3.5 for reaching the next phase of the Qualifiers.

Benfica team overview

Benfica, a 38-time Portuguese league winner, failed to win a trophy last year. The Eagles were just two points away from winning the title, and have also lost in the Taca de Portugal Finals to Sporting CP.

They were active during the pre-season, but we believe they made a really good team again. They proved that with fantastic FIFA Club World Cup performances, reaching the knockout phase. They were eliminated by the eventual champs, Chelsea, but did great in that match as well. Following a success in the FIFA Club World Cup, Benfica did great in the Super Cup, winning the trophy with a 1:0 victory over Sporting CP. The Eagles are entering the CL Qualifiers on a positive note, but it remains to be seen whether the lack of rest in the offseason will have a negative impact on Benfica players.

Prediction

During the pre-season, Nice did well, especially on the offensive end. They scored a total of 13 goals in six games - 2.17 per game. Mostly due to good offensive displays, Nice were over 2.5 goals in five of the six games - 83%.

Benfica were solid for this type of bet. If we include the FIFA Club World Cup, one friendly, and one Super Cup game, the Eagles were over 2.5 goals in half of their games (three out of six). However, they were really good offensively, averaging 2.3 goals per game, and we believe they should continue with such performances.

Additionally, both h2h games ended with three or more goals. Considering all the above, we expect at least three goals, most likely with both teams scoring.

4 Reasons why we should see three or more goals

  1. Nice went over 2.5 goals in five out of six friendlies
  2. Nice averaged 2.17 goals per game in the pre-season
  3. Benfica averaged 2.3 goals per game in the offseason
  4. Both h2h games ended with three or more goals
