The only remaining question in Gold Cup Group A is which team will finish top of the table and earn a potentially more favorable opponent in the quarterfinals. Mexico and Costa Rica have won both matches so far, and the winner of the clash at Allegiant Stadium will claim first place. A draw would also be enough for Mexico to secure the top spot due to a superior goal difference.

Mexico have won nine Gold Cup titles, so far, and they are one of the favorites for another title this year. Javier Aguirre's team, so far at the tournament, won 3-2 against the Dominican Republic and 2-0 against Suriname. Although some expected slightly easier wins, Mexico controlled most of both matches, and there wasn't any real fear of losing points.

Although Miguel Herrera's team won both games so far, it was obvious that defensive problems could cost Costa Rica in the decisive matches.
