- Venue: St. Jakob-Park
Spain have reached the final of the UEFA Women’s EURO for the first time and will be looking to prevent England from becoming back-to-back European champions when the two best teams in the competition meet at St Jakob-Park on Sunday.
La Roja had their toughest battle of the tournament so far in the semi-finals as Germany became the first team at the European Championships to prevent Spain from scoring in normal time. A goal from Aitana Bonmati in the 113th minute saw the Spaniards finally overcome the German defence to secure La Roja’s first UEFA Women’s EURO final appearance on Sunday.
The three Lionesses also had to play extra time in the semi-final against Italy. The reigning European champions were on the brink of elimination, however, until Michelle Agyemang scored the equaliser in the sixth minute of stoppage time. It was the second extra time in a row for England, having beaten Sweden on penalties in the quarter-finals.
England W - Spain W Betting Tips: Spain to Win
Spain have been by far the best team in the tournament until the final. La Roja have won all five games - if the extra-time win against Germany is counted as a victory, even though it ended 0-0 after 90 minutes - and put in impressive attacking performances throughout the tournament. Even in the goalless 0-0 draw in regulation time against Germany, Spain dominated with 22 shots on goal and a remarkable 67% possession.
England, on the other hand, have fought their way into the final of a European Championship for the second time in a row, but were unable to shine like Spain. The reigning European champions lost the opening game of the tournament to France and needed a lot of luck to win the penalty shoot-out against Sweden, and would almost have been eliminated by Italy in the semi-finals had it not been for an injury-time equaliser.
Spain are the best attacking team in the tournament with an average of almost 3 expected goals per game (xG 2.84) and have also kept a clean sheet in 60% of their games. With England not exactly convincing until the final and Spain dominating in all aspects of performance throughout the tournament, it is safe to assume that Spain will beat England on Sunday to claim their first European Championship title.
