The offseason is slowly coming to an end. One of the fan-favorite leagues to start this week is the English Championship. In the first round, one of the games to watch will be between a newly promoted Charlton and Watford, which had a pretty underwhelming last season in the English second-best division. The game will take place at The Valley in London.

These teams haven't met in a while now. The last time they played against each other was over a decade ago, in January 2015, when Watford won 5:0. In the 21st century, these teams met 14 times and mostly saw close games. Charlton won just three times (21%), while Watford won five times (36%), and six times were draws (43%).

Charlton team overview

Charlton suffered relegation from the Championship in the 2019/20 season and couldn't even reach the Playoffs in the following four years. However, last season they finally made it and instantly secured promotion by beating Wycombe and Leyton Orient.

Over the pre-season, the Addicks were active, adding nine players. On paper, they look solid, but many football pundits question whether that will be enough for survival. Right now, the bookies see them as the third favorite for relegation with the odds of around 3.75-4.0.

Watford team overview

Watford suffered relegation from the English top-flight division in 2021/22 and were a mid-table team in the following three seasons. Last year, the Hornets were in a position to secure the Playoffs, but blew it after winning only one match in the last nine games.

In the transfer window, the Hornets made some moves, and we believe they got slightly better. Their main goal this season is to reach the Playoffs (top six), but the bookies do not trust them as they offer odds around 6.0 on that bet.

Prediction

Last year, despite securing promotion, Charlton haven't been among the best offensive teams in League One. They averaged 1.41 goals per game, which was only the 11th best, and we do not believe they will be among the best offensive teams in the league above.

Meanwhile, Wartford have been very good for this bet, as they went under 2.5 goals in all four games. Also, they were pretty poor offensively away from home last season, especially in the last part of the year. They haven't scored over one goal away from home in the last seven road games.

Considering all the above, an under 2.5 goals bet seems like the best option for the upcoming Championship tie.

3 Reasons why we should see fewer than three goals

  1. Charlton averaged "only" 1.41 goals per game last season in League One
  2. Watford were under 2.5 goals in all four friendlies
  3. Watford scored one or zero goals in the last seven road games last year

Main prediction -

Under 2.5 goals
