An exciting game awaits us on Thursday at the AEK Arena on the southeast coast of Cyprus, where Larnaca play host to Legia Warsaw in a Europa League encounter. This is the first leg of a two-legged tie, in which the winner will progress to the play-offs for a place in the League Phase of the competition. There isn’t a clear favourite, and we will explain why in this Larnaca vs Legia Warsaw preview.

H2H stats

The only previous meeting between these two teams was a friendly in 2016. It was a close encounter but Larnaca won 1-0. The fixture meant that Idiakez’s side have not lost against a side from Poland and have won two of the three games played. Meanwhile, Legia Warsaw have faced Cypriot sides seven times, winning three and losing four.

AEK Larnaca team overview

Larnaca failed to win the Cypriot top-flight title once again last season. The Guardians finished fourth, 14 points behind the leaders, but the campaign ended happily as they won the Cypriot Cup.

Imanol Idiakez’s team have not lost a game since then and have gone eight games across all competitions without defeat. This run includes four European fixtures, with the team facing Partizan and Celje in the first and second qualifying rounds of the Europa League respectively.

The Guardians won the first qualifying round 6:5 on penalties after a 2:2 draw over 180 minutes, and beat Celje 3:1 on aggregate in the second round.

In terms of injuries, the hosts will be without Giorgos Naoum, Enzo Cabrera (both muscle injuries) and Marcus Rohdén (knee injury).

Legia Warszawa team overview

Like their hosts, Legia Warsaw also enjoyed a successful end to the 2024–25 season, defeating Pogon Szczecin in the Polish Cup to secure the title for the second time in three years.

Under the management of Edward Iordănescu, they also won the Polish Super Cup last month and have remained undefeated in all four of their Europa League qualifying matches thus far.

The Militarians have had a sluggish start to the new league campaign, but remain unbeaten after two games, achieving one win and one draw.

Having also avoided defeat in each of their last three away games in Europe, they will be feeling confident about their chances against Larnaca this week.

Prediction

With both Larnaca and Legia Warsaw remaining unbeaten in their last eight games across all competitions, Thursday’s match is expected to be a close one. The Guardians have been solid in defence in their recent home games, conceding only two goals in the last five. With Legia Warsaw also keeping a clean sheet in each of their last two away game, I am going for the under 2.5 goals option.

Three reasons we expect under 2.5 goals in this game

  1. Four of the last six competitive games of Larnaca ended with under 2.5 goals.
  2. Five of the last eight games of Legia Warszawa ended with under 2.5 goals.
  3. Only three of the last nine European games of Larnaca produced more than two goals.

Under 2.5 goals
