Orlando Magic

After six successive defeats, Orlando (7-8) ended their woes in style with a buzzer-beater against the Minnesota Timberwolves early on Thursday. How will they fare as their road trip ends against the short-handed Indiana Pacers (8-6), who are having to deal with key notable absences here.

After losing to two devastating scoring duos (Leonard-George, Porzingis-Doncic), the competition level is lessened - though All-Star center Nikola Vucevic isn't someone to be taken lightly either. Which side will seize the advantage in this Eastern Conference clash?

Indiana Pacers vs Orlando Magic Preview

Orlando enter this weekend clash hoping to build off their dramatic finish away in Minnesota.

Cole Anthony hit consecutive threes, including a hurried one at the buzzer, as they stunned the Timberwolves 97-96 to snap a six-game losing streak. The 20-year-old rookie, selected 15th in the 2020 draft, is averaging 10.3 points, 4.5 rebounds and 3.3 assists through 15 games this term.

Vucevic scored 28 points and eight rebounds, while veteran guard Evan Fournier added 24 on his return after missing their last nine games with lower back spasms.

The Timberwolves were up by 20, but Orlando stayed persistent, chipping away at the second-half deficit. Having been purposely fouled by Anthony to stop the clock, Jarred Vanderbilt's power missed two free throws that would've iced the game.

Anthony snatched the rebound, quickly pushed the ball up the court and drained a contested three over Malik Beasley to finish with a flourish. To begin the day, Orlando were 28th in the league for offensive rating and didn't exactly show much to dispute that low ranking early on.

They were trailing 51-35 at half-time, a deficit extended to 59-40 early in the third. Head coach Steve Clifford hailed their recovery and defensive efforts when it mattered down the stretch.

"The big thing is, in the second half, we played better.

Held them to 19 in the fourth, the defence was very good, giving ourselves a chance to hang around in the game on the road and then, obviously, he [Anthony] made an incredible shot there at the end."

Al-Farouq Aminu (right knee surgery) and Michael Carter-Williams (foot) remain sidelined, alongside Mo Bamba (COVID-19 protocols) and Chuma Okeke (knee).

Markelle Fultz, who signed a three-year, $50m extension last month, has had successful surgery to repair the torn ACL in his left knee. The 23-year-old guard will miss the rest of this campaign.

The Pacers remain without Myles Turner (hand) and new signing Caris LeVert - two key players who could've helped them overcome the Dallas Mavericks overnight.

Kristaps Porzingis had season-highs in points (27) and rebounds (12), leading Dallas to a 124-112 win overnight. All-Star guard Luka Doncic had another triple-double (13 pts, 12 rebs, 11 ast) as the Mavericks snapped a three-game losing streak - they're first in almost two years.

The Pacers have now lost successive games by double-digit margins. Malcolm Brogdon had 26 points, Domantas Sabonis finished with 25 points and 10 rebounds, giving him a franchise-record 14 in a row.

In their first home game since trading two-time All-Star Victor Oladipo to Houston for LeVert, the Pacers saw a return for guard Jeremy Lamb. 11 months after last taking the floor tore his ACL, MCL and had a fractured femur, he made his 2020-21 regular-season debut.

He was perfect (4-of-4) in the first-half but went cold after the break and didn't make another shot despite two assists and steals. He'll be hoping for more against Orlando here.

Indiana Pacers vs Orlando Magic Betting Tips

ESPN's Basketball Power Index gives the Pacers a clear advantage in this matchup (64.4%), largely down to their Sabonis-Brogdon combo. Add to that, the fact they're a better team on paper than their upcoming visitors, you shouldn't look too disapprovingly at their recent form.

The Clippers and Mavericks are both strong Western Conference sides, so losing - while not ideal - shouldn't be seen as particularly surprising either. They average 8.9 more points per game, 5% more efficient in terms of total FG (47.6) and lead the Magic across assist, block and steal categories.

Orlando can be snatching another road win if they're able to keep this encounter competitive or claw their way back like against the Timberwolves. I'm not convinced, though.
