Benfica and Atletico Madrid face in Lisbon on Wednesday night for Champions League Matchday 2 with both sides looking to continue their winning starts to the tournament.
After failing to defend their Liga Portugal title last season, losing the league by ten points to Sporting CP, Benfica were expected to give their fans a respond this season. The Eagles didn't quite live up to the pressure at the start of the season as Benfica failed to win two of the first four fixtures, but that's all in the past now. Bruno Lage's side prepare for the visit of Atletico this week on the back of four successive wins over Santa Clara, Boavista, Gil and Crvena (Europe).
Atletico Madrid didn’t also have the best of starts to the 2024-25 campaign on the domestic front. Los Colchoneros picked up just one win from their first three La Liga outings, drawing the other two against Villarreal and Espanyol. They went on to win three in a row including the win over RB Leipzig in Europe, but they managed just one win from the last three. But after drawing with the Champions Real Madrid last weekend, Atletico Madrid will expect their side to pick up all three points against Benfica this week.

Scoring goals has been one of Benfica’s biggest strengths this season. The hosts boast at least two goals from each of their last four outings, including four and five against Santa Clara and Gil Vicente respectively.

Benfica head coach Bruno Lage will once again be without the services of Tiago Gouveia this week due to injury.
