Minnesota Timberwolves

A cross-conference clash awaits next, as the Cleveland Cavaliers (9-11) host a struggling Minnesota Timberwolves (5-14) team who snapped a three-game losing streak at their expense overnight.

This season's top draft pick Anthony Edwards led them in scoring with 23 points on 9-of-15 shooting, five rebounds, four assists as well as a block and steal.

Malik Beasley (23 pts, 3 rebs, two ast) and D'Angelo Russell (19 pts, five ast) scored five threes each as they effectively held off a fourth-quarter comeback. How will they fare away from home on this occasion though? Read my basketball preview, for the best betting odds ahead of this compelling H2H matchup.

Cleveland Cavaliers vs Minnesota Timberwolves Preview

Minnesota's 109-104 victory last night was only their third in 17 games.

This proved a contrast of three-point shooting, as Andre Drummond's dominant individual display, was overshadowed by his teammates' inability to make shots from deep. They collectively connected on a season-high 16 threes, a respectable 40% clip from beyond the arc.

Drummond had 25 points, 22 rebounds and four assists - leading the game in scoring as the Cavs recorded a season-high 72 paint points. However, T-Wolves head coach Ryan Saunders was in no mood to celebrate after a rare victory, as he had this to say post-game:

"They're big; 72 points in the paint is a lot. I liked a number of things that these guys did and thought that was a definition of a team win. But you can't be satisfied because games come quick, we run it back tomorrow."

The fact their notable big men - Karl-Anthony Towns (COVID-19) and backup centre Naz Reid (wrist) - remain sidelined is far from ideal. They had no match for Drummond inside, but Edwards took over on his second successive start, and Saunders was rightly pleased in that regard:

"23 points from a 19-year-old rookie is fantastic, but we're not asking them to do that every night. We're just asking him to continue to grow, and he's doing that."

Jarrett Culver (ankle), Juancho Hernangomez (COVID-19 protocols) also remain sidelined, while Saunders confirmed Reid worked out pregame but decided against featuring.

It'll be interesting to see how Collin Sexton fares, having appeared to aggravate a left ankle sprain that recently caused him to miss five games. He fell awkwardly after a jump shot, hopped away and received treatment from the athletic trainer.

He's enjoying career-highs in points (24), assists (4.1), 3P% (43.1) and FG% (50.4) so far this term - but was among those who couldn't get it done down the stretch as Minnesota held the Cavs to 30.4% shooting in the final 12 minutes.

Cleveland Cavaliers vs Minnesota Timberwolves Betting Tips

ESPN's Basketball Power Index gives the Timberwolves a slight advantage (56.7%) as they look to secure successive wins for only the second time this term.

Their away record (1-7) makes for rough reading and is a statistic Saunders will look for his players to improve: this is the first of a five-game road trip which concludes next week in Dallas.

It's difficult for the Cavaliers to shoot much worse from three-point range than they did overnight (4-of-16, 25%) and considering they had a season-high 19 turnovers - compared to just eight by the T-Wolves, a five-point margin of defeat is telling.

I think Drummond, leading points scorer Sexton and their bench unit productivity will be key as they target splitting the two-game series.
