- Venue: Fir Park (Motherwell)
After both teams secured 1st place in their groups in the League Cup, Motherwell and Ross Couty will face off in the first round of the Scottish Premiership. The game will take place at Fir Park in Motherwell.
The previous two seasons were pretty similar for Motherwell, as they ended up in the Relegation Group on both occasions. Over the Summer, the club made some significant changes, but it is too early to tell whether they improved the squad. Judging only from the performances from the League Cup, it seems that the popular Steelmen will have the challenging task of finishing in the top six teams in Scotland.
Since coming to the Premiership in the 2019/20 season, Ross County battled against relegation in most years. Last year, they even had to play in the relegation playout but easily won against Raith on a 6:1 aggregate. Even though they did well in the preseason and the League Cup, we believe they are once again one of the primary candidates for relegation.
Motherwell vs Ross County pick: Over 2.5 goals
In the preseason and League Cup combined, Motherwell were pretty efficient, scoring 15 goals in seven matches - 2.14 per game. So, scoring two or more against a relegation candidate and one of the weakest teams from the last years should be a realistic scenario.
On the other hand, Ross County played exclusively high-scoring games in the preseason and League Cup. They were over 2.5 goals in all six games while scoring two or more goals every time.
In the previous two seasons, these teams played four h2h games and were over 2.5 goals every time with an incredible five goals per game average!
Considering all the above, we expect another high-scoring game, most likely with both teams scoring.

Motherwell team news
Over the Summer, ten players left the club including their starting goalkeeper (Liam Kelly), starting midfielder (Blair Spittal), top goalscorer (Theo Bair), starting central defender (Bevis Mugabi), etc... On the other hand, to replace the ones who left, the team added nine new players on transfers and two on loans. A few of them got the opportunity to start in the League Cup games.
Interestingly, midfielder Ross Callachan arrived at the club from Ross County and will have the opportunity to play against his previous club. However, we do not expect him in the starting lineup as he got very little playing time in the League Cup games.

Ross County team news
Just like Motherwell, Ross County were pretty active in the transfer window as well. Eight players arrived (including loans), while nine left the team. The best ones among them who departed are Jack Baldwin, Simon Murray, and Yan Dhanda.
In the previous game against Stirling, defender Ricki Lamie suffered an injury and had to leave the field after 39 minutes. The 31-year-old defender arrived from Motherwell, but he spent the last season on a loan deal playing for Dundee FC.
