AIK hosts higher-ranked GAIS at their own Strawberry Arena on Monday for round 16 of the Swedish Allsvenskan, as they desperately aim to re-enter the European race.

The club from the Swedish capital started the new league campaign violently and promisingly, but since suffering a "firecracker" by the title-holders Malmo on April 28, things have sharply deteriorated for them. Indeed, AIK managed to claim a meager six out of a possible 24 points from their most recent eight Allsvenskan outings, a woeful run of form that has seen them drop to the lower half of the table, now in eighth place with nine points less than third-placed Mjallby but with a match in hand.

On the opposite end of Monday's contest is the GAIS side, which managed to claim maximum points from their latest league assignment to get themselves back into the European race, with the  win also allowing them to shake off a dismal three-game winless run. As a newly promoted team this term, the Mackerels can be very proud of their haul of 25 points from 15 matches in the Sweden's top flight, sitting just four points away from European spots and having an additional match to play.

The two sides will renew hostilities just five days after playing the reverse fixture in which GAIS emerged victorious with a comfortable 2-0 scoreline, so the capital club will be eager to exact brutal revenge and continue their push towards European spots. Despite delivering some disappointing results at home recently, AIK have generally relied on their home ground this season, with the fact that they have secured 75% of their points and five out of their six total victories in front of their own supporters clearly showcasing their home strength. 

This is certainly an ideal opportunity for Gnaget to re-enter the battle for Europe, as their rivals GAIS have been posting poor results on enemy territory, suffering four straight losses on the road and scoring only once during that dry spell. Furthermore, there is justified concern among the Mackerels that their losing streak on the road will continue on Monday, given that their visits to Strawberry Arena have been forgettable in recent years, leaving this venue with heads bowed in the last five consecutive head-to-head clashes. Even though they have fallen into a results crisis of late, we believe that AIK have enough material to imagine getting full points here, so we see them eventually coming out on the winning side with a narrow scoreline.
