A surprise Gold Cup semi-final line-up sees host nation USA take on Guatemala after both nations secured their place in the last four with penalty shootout victories in the quarter-finals over the weekend.

Guatemala ensured unlikely progress to the semi-finals as they stunned Canada with a dramatic penalty shootout success on Sunday. Having fallen behind to Jonathan David’s first-half strike, the underdogs battled back bravely, levelling the match through Rubio Rubin before holding their nerve in the shootout to pull off one of the tournament’s biggest upsets.

The US achieved similar success as they eventually saw-off Costa Rica after a 2:2 draw at U.S Bank Stadium. After twice taking the lead, Mauricio Pochettino's men claimed an expected victory as they emerged 4:3 winners in the shootout.

After some heavy criticism for some poor displays under the Argentine boss in the past six months, the US now look like heavy favourites to secure a fourth appearance in five Gold Cup finals over the past 12 years.

Three successive wins over Trinidad and Tobago (5:0), Saudi Arabia (1:0), and Haiti (2:1) have boosted confidence in the Stars and Stripes camp. While they couldn’t get the job done inside 90 minutes against Costa Rica, they should have too much quality for a Guatemalan side still chasing their first-ever Gold Cup final appearance.

The US emerged comfortable victors in four of their last five matches against Guatemala, and they should achieve a similar feat this week.
